The fireflies are back!
Posted 4 Days Ago

I don't recall seeing a single one last spring, but a short while ago I saw something out of the corner of my eye - something luminous, but far to high up to be the headlamp of a car so I went out onto the balcony to take a look. I didn't see anything for a few moments but I know they can be a bit elusive at first, and then I saw a flash, and then another and another

"Dalston offers a great selection of coffee shops, bars, resturants [sic] and clubs."
Oh my goodness. You certainly couldn't have said that about the Dalston I used to know
The closest thing you'd have found to a coffee shop would have been a cup of Nescafe or Maxwell House at one of the local greasy spoons. There weren't any bars, only pubs, and you had to be careful about which one you went in, and when. Leaving aside the aforementioned greasy spoons (which were actually pretty good, especially the one that used to be on the west side of Kingsland Road just south of Dalston Junction), the closest thing to a restaurant would have been Cookeses Pie and Mash shop (where you'd often see old women sucking on chunks of jellied eel but is now probably stiff with hipsters) plus a curry house or two and maybe a Chinese, and although not strictly a restaurant, the Ridley Road Bagel Bake (not sure if that was its real name but that's what everyone called it) was a local gem and it was open 24 hours, which was useful because I'd often drop in there while working through the night.
As far as clubs are concerned, well that's isn't something I ever had anything to do with, but at the time I'd guess that they were underground, illegal and probably run by people like Brick Top
"Dalston-based retail havens"
That would have been Ridley Road market and the stalls along Kingsland Waste. I don't think Poundland was around back then.

It was her last show; what are they going to do, fire her?
At first I thought they should have just let her do the whole show pissed as a fart but put a ten-second delay on it so they can bleep out anything untoward, and then I thought what fun it'd be if more DJs/presenters were allowed to do one show a year when bladdered, but it did get a bit tedious after a while.

Sid James was born 100 years ago today. No, I didn't realise that either until I checked. Doesn't seem right but it's true.
