Wichita KS, 2008. Welcome to the world's largest small town. I teach ESOL in the public school system here and in general like my job, although NCLB has made it more challenging. Not sure if Obama will assist us in making the situation more conducive to student learning and less threatening to teachers. If only my friend Bureaucrates would recognize that it takes from 5 to 7 years to gain academic competence in a second language, my students might have a better chance of success. This year the school where I teach made AYP across the board, so maybe we're doing something right. No threat of reorganization this time around.
We have students from all over the world, Mexico and Vietnam being the most common places of origin this year. What fascinating stories they can tell, if given the chance. My goal is to help them learn how to tell their own stories comprehensibly. I'm kinda proud of their efforts. They're not perfect, but definitely show progress.
