People, or writers. smiley - winkeye

Sorry, I'm a little too tired to post something properly at the moment. Real life has been hard work and the new site has meant this place has been a stress-pit for a couple of days too. I'm going to take a back seat at wait it out.

I hope to come back to this conversation bright and eager in a couple of weeks. smiley - ok

And just to add to the stress onsite, it looks like the BBC are to sell off h2g2. http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/alabaster/F19585?thread=8017955 Jim Lynn has posted saying they hope to sell it on rather than close it down as the website says, but this is a new development. Possibly a good one, depending on the new owners. Ouch.

Hmmmm. Have to say I'm not surprised smiley - shrug.

I hope they give me enough time to get all my work off it.

Times change, and we always were an uneasy acquisition for the BBC. I am very glad that they have decided to try to sell it on rather than close it.

I'm actually quite excited. If we're lucky, this could be the new lease of life that the site needs. If we're unlucky... well, it was probably doomed under the BBC anyway.

Well, as the Buddhists say, 'everything is impermanent'. Communities are set up, grow, thrive, decline, and finally die. Sometimes, their real estate gets sold off and they decamp en masse to fresh pastures.

More often than not, it's those who are afraid of change that feel the urge to follow the herd, even if they've forgotten why they joined it in the first place. Even if they'd be better off standing alone and looking around at the uninterrupted view, for once. smiley - smiley

Mind you, the view is hardly uninterrupted. The internet is full of stuff.

Ah well. It'll work out or it won't. People will move on. If there's a new h2g2 they may move on to that, or they'll just move away, as so many others have done before them.

Can't say I'm that bothered. If h2g2 had any real popular appeal then this wouldn't be happening.

Quite.

It is important to me and to a handful of others. It's a tiny project run for fun. It has no importance in the real world and, as you say, quite a narrow appeal. I'm fine with that. I'm fine with the BBC chucking us out, although I'm suprised it took them this long.

I think a few die-hards really think that h2g2 is important and that this is somehow a newsworthy event. smiley - sigh

It doesn't mean that what h2g2 does isn't important. It just means that it doesn't sit well within the BBC's remit.

In its current form, it isn't important. It's not a valuable encycolpedic resource, and it's (no longer) zany enough to be a worthwhile comedy-cum-reference resource.

Definitely a case for ceasing talking, anyway - there will never be an agreement on that point so continuing will just continue an argument.

Sometimes, the argument ends up coming to you anyway: F52677?thread=8020832

I reall wish people would realise when something has run its course and it's time to move on. I have no intention of of being the one who turns out the smiley - eurekas, but other don't realise that it could be them.

If it really is a case of turn out the lights, then leave - there's no need to spread bad feeling before you go. If you really think it's a lost cause, then why hang around?
Personally I'd rather like you to stay as you and I have a similar outlook on what the site should be, even if you are rather more ascerbic than I. smiley - winkeye

I don't think it's at that stage yet, but I do think the consortium are jumping ahead a little. There is so little that we know about. They nay already be in talks, there may not be. Who knows. Nowt we can do except carry on as we were and make ourselves look attractive to a new buyer.
