Why do the big steam engines get all the glory, eh? Time for someone to stand up for the little guys that played as big a role in the Glory Days of Steam.

Gnomon - time to move on

The title suggests a strange weapon developed in the Isle of Wight during the Second World War but never fully implemented. Giant cannons fired small terriers across the Channel. Each was equipped with a parachute and would land behind enemy lines and wreak havoc.

Ah yes - the real reason Britain was never invaded was nothing to do with the Few, but because the enemy Generals couldn't get a good nights sleep with all the barking...

Nice entry, and well done on the obligatory use of the word diminutive when talking about Terriers. Haven't seen any of the IOW ones myself, but briefly went aboard Stepney at York a few years ago. That's a very tired engine, not really able to pull trains anymore, just steam away on its own.

well tanks ?

smiley - dohYes, well tanks, not wall tanks. Unless you are asking whether the Slaughter Grunings tank engines are well, in which case sadly they're not, having been scrapped last century.

This is interesting - that is an excellent photo. smiley - biggrin

A few questions as I read through:

The trains were not numbered *consecutively*, is that right?

In relation to FYNR, what do 'grouping' and 'eternally bankrupt' mean?

Did Carisbrooke run with boiler problems or was she fixed?

Can we have a footnote on TWERPS please? smiley - laugh What an acronym to choose!

The section Isle of Wight Terriers duplicates the table so can be deleted (as strikethrough doesn't always show up)

Ah - I see there is a glossary at the end... Perhaps it is not needed either, as it would be helpful if the acronyms were defined when they appear in the text...

I've added a footnote to explain 'Grouping' and changed 'eternally bankrupt' to 'bankrupt'. (The company never had or made any actual money).

When I wrote the entry I felt there were far too many footnotes, so I put all the acronyms in a Glossary to remove the footnote problem, but now I suppose I should put all the acronyms back into footnotes to alleviate the Glossary problem...

It was the original W9, not Carisbrooke, that had the boiler problems, with Carisbrooke becoming W9's replacement. I've reworded that bit to hopefully make it clearer.

Since h2g2 began I've always wanted to use STRIKE tags in an entry that makes it into the Edited Guide. (Boxheaders too, but I've had to conceed that I'll never succeed with those now.) I've never managed it so far. Although there is a degree of repetition, it presents the information in numerical rather than chronological order.

I don't think you even need footnotes for acronyms; putting The Description of the Thing (TDT) will suffice the first time you use them smiley - ok

What significance does numerical order have? Given that the numbers weren't always the same anyway, I just don't understand the list (not least because the strikethrough is missing anyway these days!)

Good clarification of the boiler problems smiley - ok

Its a railway geek thing its very interesting if you like engines but most people miss the point.

The entry needs this information for the connoisseurs of the subject it is very important. smiley - biggrin

I've amalgamated the tables. The first one still has strikethrough on the scrapped engines' numbers, which will be an added bonus for those viewing in skins that display it, but without being to the detriment of people looking at the entry unable to see the strikes.

Excellent

Please include an explanation of "especially as it had been lightly laid" as it is not obvious to the casual reader smiley - smiley

The first time I've mentioned 'lightly-laid lines' the next sentence explains that 'These lines had been made quickly and cheaply and were initially unable to cope with larger, heavier engines.' I think this should suffice, as I'd prefer not to go into details about the development of the permanent way such as the replacement of wrought-iron rails with steel to make the rails stronger and able to be used by heavier engines and/or trains.smiley - smiley
