smiley - smiley Very interesting! Have people in Europe gone all jeans and t-shirts these days? smiley - bigeyes You used to be able to tell where you were by the clothes.

My sense, when living in Europe, was that Frenchwomen - at least, the few I knew - wore their clothes better than almost anyone else. However, I noticed this same effortless elegance in impoverished parts of Belgium and Romania, as well. Maybe it was bequeathed to them by Roman matrons? smiley - winkeye

It wasn't the expense of the clothing, or the cutting-edge fashion, or the fabric. It was just the way they looked comfortable and attractive in whatever they wore - as if their clothes just FIT better. I've never seen anybody make a simple jersey dress look like a fashion statement like that.

And it wasn't figure, either. A dear French lady we knew in Cologne was middle-aged and somewhat stout. She *still* managed to be the most attractive person in any room. It's that je-ne-sais-quoi, I guess.

It's perhaps just a question of taking a bit of care.smiley - erm

When I got back to England and looked round Tescos, I saw more women I might have defined as scruffy. Mind you, I can't talk...smiley - laugh

Personally, I think scruffy is fine. smiley - winkeye But I have no room to talk, being addicted to scruffy, myself.
