Excellent work just a little of the early history missing.

The (Board of) Ordinance Survey was the original name. The ordinance was gunnery the defence of the relm.
They needed to know the defensive points and where to put the artillery to cause the most damage. This ment the accurate distances were needed.
Needless to say it proved so useful that every one used it not just the army.

The cadastral plans of Napoleon were the French equivalent and these are still used in France today.

smiley - applause good work well done

The US Geological Survey was originally administered by the US Army,

Current USA military maps are calibrated and printed to the same standard as British OS maps.

Good old Ordnance Survey – I went there as a child in around 1990 and was given a tour, and was shown they had a fantastic computer programme that had road maps of the UK on, and you could type in two places and it would give you a route map between the two. (It was susceptible to the old Bournemouth/Brighton bug, where if you ask for the best route between Bournemouth and Brighton, it recommends catching the ferry from Lymington to Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight and then from Fishbourne back over to the mainland at Portsmouth. This is quicker, true, but would add up to an extra £150 onto the cost of the journey).

The first OS site in Southampton on Asylum Green is a Grade II listed building, although most of the original buildings were destroyed in the war, and the site is used as the Magistrates Court: http://list.english-heritage.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1339984

Gnomon - time to move on

Good Elentari.

I've a few suggestions but I can't post them since the system only allows short postings from mobile phones. I'll be home tomorrow evening and I can do it then.

That was supposed to say Good entry Elentari rather than sounding like a pat on the head.

Actually I could just post them in pieces.

When Roy produced "a magnificent sketch", was this of England, of Great Britain or of Great Britain and Ireland?

Even late into the 20th Century

Since scales nowadays are given as 1 to some large number, I think it would be good to give the old-style scales in this form too. For example you could say "one inch to the mile (1:63,360)"

Thanks all. I'm a bit busy over the next couple of days but I'll get to these amendments when I can.

I've finally got around to updating this to take account of the comments above. In the process, something funny has happened to the Guide ML and there are extra line spaces showing up which aren't there on the edit page. I still don't know how to edit entries under the new hootoo!

Don't edit entries under the new hootoo, as the editor doesn't work yet. Try and do all your editing using the old system.

Don't worry about the extra lines. They are easily removed in the polishing process. I am aware that they are annoying.

And smiley - applause for the Entry. I like its length, it manages to empart enough information, but in a readable style. Informative and interesting, with a succinct conclusion.

It's a pity I no longer own any really old OS maps, I used to have a small collection of interesting places. I guess someone will have some though - and maybe would take a photo of their covers for us?

Anyway, thanks for writing - and equally importantly, returning to update the Entry here. smiley - smiley
