Florida Sailor All is well with the world

An interesting entry, I have also not seen the film, only the trailers on TV.

One point of confusion, in the opening you tell us;

> In the film, worker ant Z(1) is wondering about the meaning of life and his place in the colony when he meets Princess Bala

Then later on you say;

>Also, termite workers can be both male and female, but ant workers are all female

Is ant Z male or female?

Thanks both smiley - biggrin

I've expanded the paragraph about the termites and ants, so I hope that clarifies the point - Z is male in the film, but should be female if it is to be true to the life of ants smiley - laugh

This doesn't really explore the political and philosophical themes in Antz. I show the film to my sociology students and point out the hidden banners and slogans, eg "Nothing Satisfies Like Work", "Conquer Idleness" and the very sinister "Freetime is for Training".

Just the first 5 minutes of the film is enough to start a discussion in my lessons. Achieved vs ascribed status; proletariat and bourgeoisie; furthering the interests of the ruling classes; false consciousness - it's all in Antz!

I forgot about consensus or conflict, structure or action, the social construction of reality etc, all there too, if you look for it. So maybe the entry needs to include these themes.

Gnomon - time to move on

Good entry.

On a quick skim, I spotted Guatenemara. Did you mean Guantanamera?

smiley - antI enjoyed reading this – it is always flattering to feel I've inspired someone to write something, even when my original's still in Peer Review smiley - biggrin

I did know if you wanted to mention what John Lennon's classic song has had its lyrics changed to, though all they are saying is 'Give Z a Chance'smiley - peacesignsmiley - musicalnote

If you enjoyed this film, there are some similarities with 'Bee Movie', especially regarding the insect work ethic.smiley - ant

Thanks everyone

Oops - I know the song Guantanamera, but it's one of those where I've only heard the lyrics rather than reading them, so I obviously misheard smiley - blush Changed smiley - ok

Similarly, I couldn't tell what changes had been made to the lyrics of Give Peace a Chance, so I've tweaked that bit too, thanks <BB< smiley - ok

I've rejigged the structure a bit, so there's now a paragraph rather than just a sentence about the politics and philosophy. I hope that's OK for you, coelacanth, but if there's anything else you think I should add, let me know - I've put in an Additional Research credit for you smiley - ok

I have been given a copy of Bee Movie too, so that's ready for me to watch somewhen smiley - biggrin

I'd not heard of false consciousness before reading this thread, but I read it again today, not uncoincidentally... Fascinating...

There's no need to give me Additional Researcher credit, all I did was list a few concepts that can be found in Antz, but it's possible to watch it without being aware of these themes. I'm glad to have introduced you to false consciousness though!

Thanks coelacanth - I've taken the credit out, and just thank you here for helping to make the Entry much richer smiley - biggrin The film's depth makes it relevant to many real life scenarios indeed...
