Excellent overdue entry. I've not got time to give it a thorough read-through now, but will just mention ' Writers Irving Block and Allen Adler originally conceived the story of Forbidden Planet as a B Picture and presented it to Axxx' – who/what is Axxx? Also, I'm sure Qui-Hon Jinn uses a lightsabre rather than just the limitless power of the Force.

Good points BB. I use xxx to mean "fill this in later". smiley - smiley

The inertial damping field special effects the space travelers used to protect themselves against high accelerations in "Forbidden Planet" are later adapted to provide transporter beam special effects in "Star Treo.

"Forbidden Planet" has long been among my favorites.

Weren't those damping in a deleted scene?

In the TV cuts I've seen, the crew of the saucer ship were shown standing on pads surrounded by an ambiance of light, like the Star Trek transporter beam effects, at the beginning and conclusion of the story, on their arrival at and departure from Altair IV.

On the concept, if anyone knew how to do it, an inertial damping or stasis field would also stop entropy within its locus, making ti e effectively stand, though the passage of cosmological time outside the locus would be unaffected.

in the last line, that should have been 'making time effective!y stand still'

...at any rate, the inertial damping field/stasis field special effects from "Forbidden Planet" were identically the same special effects used for the transporter beam spe ial effects from the 1960s "Star Trek", they metely used a little differently...

'spe ial' is obviously supposed to be 'special'

'metely' was supposed to have been 'were merely'

Thanks ITIWBS. I'll watch that part again and put in a mention of it.

Nice entry, Gnomon - I've seen the movie, and enjoyed it too - especially the drinking session with the robot.

There's a very similar robot in the TV series Lost in Space. I'm not sure which came first. If FP did, then Lost in Space borrows heavily from this movie.

Finally, there was a stage version - a rock musical "Return to the Forbidden Planet" which did the rounds here in the 1990s - I saw it once. It didn't really have much of a plot to it, as far as I recall - just used the characters to weave links to a number of rock & roll songs.

The writer also penned the musical "From a Jack to a King" - based this time on Macbeth. (I didn't see it)

One other thing while I remember. Wasn't Prospero's elixir called 'X-factor"?

I was wondering if this was the first use of that phrase.

A very good review that I can't think of anything more to add (except possibly mention that Star Trek episode 'Requiem for Methuselah' is a virtual remake, with Methuselah as Morbius, the girl as the girl and Kirk as Adams, only with the twist that the girl is the robot and without an ID creature).

There are a couple of uncharacteristic spelling errors, 'estabished' and 'an misformed' – do you mean malformed or misshapen?

I may mention "Return to the Forbidden Planet", but I don't think I'll bother tracking down a copy it.

pebblederook-The old guy wearing surfer beads- what does he think he looks like?

It was nice to revisit this movie favourite via your article, thank you.

I think this line needs a sub edit 'the only men she's seen are her own father than the savage Caliban.'

I seem to remember another special effect being the footprints of the invisible monster appearing on the desert floor. It was always the achilles heel of any invisible creature. If they ever evolve to solve that little problem they could take over the worlds. smiley - smiley

Based on the comments here, I've added to the "Influence" section. I now give a brief summary of the Star Trek episode "Requiem for Methusaleh" and mention the inertial dampers being used as transporters. I also have a very short paragraph on "Return to the Forbidden Planet".

I've removed the reference to "X-factor", as the phrase seems to be much older than that show.
