1643 They're glass bubbles inside a galileo thermetor - they rise and fall depending on the temperature (they're slightly different weights).

Ditto here, now about 5:00pm, outdoor temperature ~108F/42C, a little lower than fore cast, but hot enough,
Same principle as I turn up the refrigerator for the torrid season (else it will not make ice), I don't want to overload the AC a downright feeble machine by comparison with those being produced 30 years ago.
Most of my batch coking is done anyway.
