smiley - cool

That's great. Not sure yet if it is exactly what I was looking for, but it's certainly better than before.

With that setting, my search for:

bishop sentan

returns a relevant result in the 8th position, titled "Holy Wells".

I'm confused here!

I search on Google uk for "bishop sentan" (without the quotes) and up the top of the results page this box comes up:

"Including results for bishop sentence
Search only for bishop sentan"

So I click on the "Search only for bishop sentan" and that seems to do what you want - it comes up with results with the exact words "bishop sentan" in?

That's interesting - I don't think it was doing that last week. It may because the h2g2 pages have now been indexed.

If we expect too much from Google, is it because Google asks us to? Self-driving cars, indeed!

There are other search engines. If I avoid them, it's because so many of them put a screen's worth of useless links ahead of the hits that I really want smiley - groan. But maybe people should not automatically go to Google every time, just as they should sample more alternatives when looking for social media and online vendors.

Google became popular for three reasons.

1 it only returned that contained all the words you specified
2 it sorted the results by poularity
3 in later years but not at the start it had a lot of pages in its index

They've now abandoned feature 1.

Unfortunately while there are many search engines, there don't seem to be any that do what I want, namely search for the words I type in.
