"assertive and vocal against financial inequality"
On a shortlist of men who want to sit on a golden throne and lecture poor Africans? Why, that's every one of them, surely?

That'll teach me for speed-reading. When you wrote Cardinal Turkson, I read Jeremy Clarkson.
Does anyone here have a J-cloth?

I agree 603, it's kinda "rich" of anyone in the Vatican to lecture on financial equality. A lot of the priests though, out in the field, have a right to do so as they deal with it day in day out from the not having any side of things. But sitting on a gold plated throne and lecturing? No.

I think this is why I'd prefer to see one of the newer, more unheard of cardinals get the position, if they're able to make changes they're the more likely to at least try.

See! See! The second guy on the list Pastey posted
is my guy, the Canuck.
>> Cardinal Ouellet, 68, from Canada, has headed the Congregation for Bishops since 2010 and has strong Curial connections.
A native French speaker who also speaks fluent Spanish, he has spent much of his life since ordination as a seminary professor and rector, spending 10 years in Colombia and nine in Canada before being appointed to teach at the John Paul II Institute for Marriage and Family in 1997.
A former editor of Communio, an international journal co-founded by Joseph Ratzinger, his thinking is closely linked with that of the resigning Pope. He also has close connections with the Latin American Church.
After a brief stint as vice-president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, he was named Archbishop of Quebec in 2002 and appointed a cardinal in 2005. Since then, he has stoked controversy by speaking out on moral issues in Canada's largely secular society. <<
Anyone taking bets?

The thing is, should the Catholic Church change to reflect the modern world?
IMO, no, no it shouldn't. It's a god club, one of many god clubs. Each has it's own USP. Catholicism is very good at homophobia, misogyny and medieval values but then so is it's great rival Islam. However Islam doesn't have the same infrastructure in the West so isn't a direct competitor. The competition for Catholicism comes from the various Protestant sects who seem to really like interacting with modern trends - recognising women as people for one, understanding that fiddling with kids is generally a Bad Thing for another. In a crowded sector, god clubs have to stand out to maintain market share. The uniforms certainly help, the logo of the dead guy's execution equipment is excellent, the infallibility is a good selling point and the history of being generally down on people leaving their club all combine to make a product that is deservedly the market leader. I think it would be suicide for the Catholic Church to change and try to emulate other clubs - and suicide is another thing they don't like so there you go.
What's bizarre is the real world letting these god club members influence laws. We wouldn't ask the Hartlepool Airfix Modellers Club what they thought about birth control after all would we?

Yeah right, any cardinal known to the inner circle will be straight down the line of what they want...keep everyone of their servants under the kosh and throw out any dogma that has got *really really really* stupid.
Obviously, *really really* stupid basically is religion.

How can it?
The Catholic Church is the mouth piece of the one real god which exists out of time and made all the rules which presumably are still cast in stone...
Unfortunately, the Catholic Church does keep changing its mind...one can only hope that if the Catholic version of Yahweh does exist he's pissed off with them not doing *exactly* what it wants and they are all down in hell with us rationalists (i.e. non-believers).

The catholic church has changed many times over the years to move (belatedly) with the times, the last main one I can think if is not having the mass only Saud in Latin.

So, should that C'Church recast the rules - in Lonsdaleite?

An interesting point was made on the radio today - at a time when church attendances in general are falling, those churches which stick to the more hard line orthodoxy are seeing growing congregations. If this Vatican does any market research, they'll appoint an MD that will play to their strengths.

Is it just popes and catholic priests that fiddle with children. I read somewhere that the main kiddy fiddlers were men, mainly step-fathers and uncles, and some fathers. Given that popes and catholic priests form a small subset of that constitution surely its the stepfathers / uncles that people should be denouncing when it comes to going after the kiddy fiddlers?

Or we could stick to the topic of which we think will be the next pope rather than the whole new and much more serious topic of allegations, both proven and not of child abuse and the thousands of individuals a year that are affected by it rather than using it as a cheap shot at the Catholic church.
I'm not a fan of the Catholic church, not by a long way. However child abuse is not a laughing matter, and not one to be lightly thrown into a thread to try and get an argument going or have a cheap dig. I would suggest that if you are serious about the matter, then please contact and work with one of the charities that help the victims. If you're UK based I'd suggest the NSPCC www.nspcc.org.uk/ or their equivalent where you are.
