Subbing Tolkien's Dwarves
Magwitch - My name is Mags and I am funky. Started conversation Dec 9, 2014
Hi Gnomon,
I'm your sub ed for this one. The new one is here: A87838951 I'm sure you won't forget to subscribe.
It's been a while since I've either subbed anything or read any Tolkien (scandalous on both counts, I know). So just a couple of queries:
Under Dwarf Cities paragraph 3
a monster who had been sleeping there for millennia.
Word seems to think this should be '...a monster *that* had been sleeping...'
and in Footnote 4 daft question, should it be 'Gandalfr' or just 'Gandalf'?

Generally "who" is used if referring to a person and "that" if referring to a thing. The monster in this case is a thinking being, so it could be either. I'd be happy to have either "who" or "that", whichever you prefer.
The spelling of Gandalfr is correct in the list of Icelandic dwarfs. Old Icelandic words often seem to have stray r's at the end.

I just spotted a mistake - I said that Sauron made 15 rings, divided into 9 for men, 7 for dwarves and 1 for himself. This adds up to 17, not 15.

Another mistake - Khazad-dûum - Moria That second "u" is an error and should not be there.

Changes made.
Thanks for the clarification of Gandalfr.
I think I'll leave it at 'who' because as you say it's a thinking being.
I also found a stray 'an' as opposed to 'a'

Ah yes, an magic sleep.
That was probably originally an enchanted sleep, but I'd used the word already in that sentence.

Had another read over, I can't find anything else to query and I think there are enough links (I can't find anything else, anyway).
A record return time, Gnomon?

Yes. TC once subbed one of my entries, made no changes and sent it back. That was probably the record.

Poop,
You should make some deliberate mistakes next time, Gnomon
It's always a pleasure, never a chore
