smiley - laugh

I watched the start of tonight's Chase when I had to return to Mum's with her prescription cream. I said to the first contestant "I hope you win!" and Mum did laugh. I know how it feels to be there.

Oh and I missed the show last week where a female took minus £5K smiley - yikes and there was quite a rumpus on Facebook (I was not subscribed, my younger brother sent me the link to a posting). Someone actually said "Anyone who goes high, whether they win or lose, is a legend" (made me grin from ear to ear)smiley - biggrin

Ok. I've looked it up now. Congratulations. I thought "The Chase" was the one where they took you to Romania and hunted you down with dogs. There would have been less congratulations if i'd not been quite so wrong.

In tonight's Chase there was a Douglas Adams question which I, and the contestant, knew the answer to. The Chaser got it wrong.

What is this mile of which you speak? In Sweden and Norway a mile is a unit length of 10,000 meters. Before the metric system was introduced in Sweden and Norway (1889), a mil was even 10,688.54 meters in Sweden and 11,295 meters in Norway.
10,000 meters were initially referred to as "nymil" (newmile). Mil is still a "living" entity in both Sweden and Norway, but for official purposes one usually uses kilometer (and the other meter units).
An old Norwegian mile was 11,295 meters - or the equivalent of 12,352.3622047 yards smiley - biggrin

Is it a good idea to ask about Scandinavian nautical miles? smiley - biggrin

It is smiley - winkeye

A Swedish sømil (seamile) used to be constituted by 1/15 of the equator degree or 7,420.44 meters and responded thus to approximately 4 nautical miles. Sømil was used well into the 1900s in pilotage rates and the seafaring population along the Scandinavian coasts.

A Danish sømil however was 1,851.11 meters. A Danish sømil should not be confused with an international nautical mile, although the difference is less than 1 meter.

An international nautical mile was in 1929 at an international conference set to 1,852 meters.

I feel so sorry for the Mastermind contenders. This week I answered all but one of the general knowledge that one contestant got, but couldn't answer any that another got. Luck of the draw and all thatsmiley - shrug
