I just started working at a grocery store in the US, just bagging groceries. OK so the pay sucks but at least I haev a job while I look for a better job. smiley - 2cents

If a grocery bagger goes out to someone's car to load their groveries into the trunk for them, that would be another time when they often get tipped.

Good point Nerd. If there is any question regarding tipping, one should always ask locals for advice.

Unfortunately, in our local groceries, tipping grocery store attendants is strictly forbidden by the grocery chains and is even posted on the entries to the stores.

It seems to depend on whether the store is staffed by union employees. Unions will often set up artificial rules about whether baggers or delivery men can receive tips. In some cases tips will not be allowed, while in others a small gratuity will be charged automatically.
In most grocery stores that aren't unionized, the general rule is that tipping is optional but greatly appreciated. This counts if someone delivers groceries to your car or home, not for checkout at the counter.

If you have no idea about the grocery store in question, I'd attempt to tip. If the tip is not accepted, it's best not to press the issue. smiley - smiley

... *ahem!* ... A UNION for GROCERY BAGGERS!?

from my vast experience of 1 day working as a grocery store bagger, if there's one thing that grocery baggers don't need its a union

Well, usually the union is for all non-management employees. smiley - smiley A union for baggers alone would be frankly a bit silly.

haha, organized baggers.

I worked as a bagger. We weren't supposed to accept tips, so a customer would offer a tip upon delivering groceries to their trunk of said customer, in turn I would discretly put the bills and/or change depending on level of stinginess of once again said customer, although stinginess seems like a wound from a bee upon my spelling, it is a tip and I was greatful for any amount, right into my pocket and never told anyone about it.

Sorry for the lengthy display for baggers tipping. But again your job is bagging groceries if you get fired for accepting a tip, then all more reason to find a better job.

I never worked as a bagger smiley - sadface, but sometimes I find that I have to bag my own grocs anyways, or sit and watch things melt while check out clerks look anxiously for bagger assistance.

Well, the good news is you know your job sucks and it isn't your life's ambition. There for you have many opportunities to leave it behind.

Lots of places you can tip people... casinos, strip joints, chartered boats, valets, and maitre d's.

Naw, too many possibilities and variances from region to region to list all tipping circumstances. That's why there's a little disclaimer at top that says if in doubt you should tip and at the bottom that says this doesn't cover everything and to check with locals.
