so it seems that although it's not actually mentioned anywhere, it has to be plugged into the mains.
I can't plug it into the mains (the part that plugs into the router) because there is only one socket there, and that has to have the router, the phone and the wifi booster plugged into it.
So I took it back and got a new mp3 player instead (Gruesome #2 nicked my old one)
