About the feeling words can offer, I think compression sounds smoother. Compaction sounds hard,heavy.

I'm trying to remember what word Thunderbird uses for mailboxes. While I prefer compression, if compacton has a specific definition in database contexts which includes the removal of expired data, it may be technically distinct from simple compression. Where there are terms of art which capture your precise meaning, use them
