Can anyone identify these blobs?
Gnomon - time to move on Started conversation Jan 16, 2015
Entry A87846808
I've been working through a list of old blobs for years trying to identify them. I've got about 3,500 of them sorted, but there are still a load of photos and about 50 pictures that I don't understand. Can you help?
The entry linked in this post shows a selection of images. If you can figure out what they are or where they were used, post here or at the conversation on that entry. When a few have been identified, I'll remove them from the entry and put up a few more.
Thanks.

and in 18, 'German Byte' is clearly a pun on the sea area 'German Bight' (Heligoland). A computerised navigation aid looks likely.

21 is a Volvo.
The grill has a very iconic diagonal bar with badge.

I like the qualifier 'very iconic'
I'm now looking for things which are merely 'iconic' or even 'mildly iconic'.

Hmm...
A simple diagonal bar would be merely iconic; as would just any old badge. But a
diagonal bar WITH badge is very, very iconic in a very specific Volvonic kinda way.

This very iconic imagery dates way back.

The original suggestion that the blob in question might have been a Rover is based
upon familiarity of a similar functional body shape among better quality salon style
cars of the same era.

But Rovers of the same period had only a badge - not very iconic - of a Viking longboat
approaching head on in a highly ironic attack posture pictured on a shield that was more
vulva than Volvo.

Are these blobs supposed to accompany entries if any get written on those subjects? if none ever get written, do prizes get handed out for those who guess correctly?
[I regret that I had no clue about *any* of them. ]

Most of the blobs were designed for Edited Entries. Some were for clubs; if you had a club you could request a logo.
You are free to use them on your own pages, but you shouldn't use them on pages that you intend to submit to the Edited Guide, as the modern artists generally provide much better (and bigger) images for the Edited Guide.
Some day, I'll publish an index.
I'm not in a position to offer any prizes.

You don't have to offer prizes.
Since on of the blobs was a car logo, did we have any car clubs? I don't remember any, but this place was very diverse when I first started.

Those smileys look like the set of home-made ones on Bluebottle's PS

Ah. I wasn't aware of those smileys on Bluebottle's home page. That explains five of the blobs - Apple, Doughnut (which I thought was white nose), Borg, Millennium Dome and Isle of Wight. I can tick off those.

There was an F-1 page and F-1 threads appeared
quite regularly in ASK. Especially when the likes of
Tinkerbell got a ride in a GT-40 at Silverstone and
almost got future champ Jenson Button's autograph.
There was also a character named Austin Morris who
held court over several motoring threads.
We often asked for more auto smileys and all we ever
got from the BBC was a .

Coelacanth has identified almost all the pictures now. There are still about 10 left to go.
I've about 700 photos as well, but I'm not going to tackle them just at the moment.
