What would Galileo do?
swl Started conversation Nov 10, 2014
A friend has hinted they would like a telescope for Christmas - nothing fancy, just for looking at the stars and so on. I know zilch about telescopes so I thought I'd ask here:
1) Refractor or reflector?
2) Tripod mounted binoculars?
3) Suggestion please - about the £100 mark or so.

I gave up on my 'scope and took up a pair of 15x70 SkyMaster Celestron binoculars. Never looked back

You're obviously not a Queen fan Paul - it's a nod towards Bohemian Rhapsody.

From what I can tell, telescopes go VERY expensive at the upper end. Thousands. Tens of thousands. My assumption would be that, for one that's any good, you'd need to spend more than a hundred.
Having said that, I have never looked into it myself. An Argos catalogue might be a decent initial guide.

Sho and Red, it was Scaramouche that Queen asked to do the fandango. Galileo came later.
I see a little silhouetto of a man
Scaramouche, Scaramouche, will you do the fandango?
Thunderbolt and lightning, very, very, frightening me

Paulh,
a fandango is a style within the flamenco. there are also different subtypes of fandangos.
It can be sung and danced, some have lyrics and other just the rhythm.
Looking for some decent video I´ve found out that maestro Rodrigo (spanish classical guitar) wrote one.
In this one you can hear the fandango while a dancer is taking an exam about it.
