Are driverless cars a good idea?

OO... just realised... if you don't need like an actual driving licence... because, well, there isn't really* a driver... I could get one scarey thought and driving back from the pub would no longer be a problem

The cab companies are going to be thinking of getting rid of drivers soon maybe the end of the black cabs in London priced out of the market.

Will they come in pink 2 legs. But one advantage you can fit curtains and get up to all sorts of mischief to pass the journey time.

The more I think about this the more I like the idea. If I could join for a couple hundred dollars a month and have a car guaranteed for the times I need it and request the odd shopping trips it would be great.
If 2-Legs can improve his mobility that would be even better and maybe Bluebottle could avoid cycling in inclement weather.
Last night we stopped at one of the local tourist streets just for the fun of shopping there and I bet I spent the best part of an hour finding a place to park and retrieving the car. A driverless car could have made that much simpler.
Where can I sign-up?

Or. ban personal car ownership, and use, in citys. have a 'pool' of such, automated, driverless cars/cabs, and pay monthly rental, or hourly rental, in afect, for using them; set number of cars/berchils etc., in any given city area, to a level able to be supported by the physical environment a ... kinda... personalised public transport... Hmmm... I thihnks the details would need to be worked out oh, and ban that newspaper delivery van which wakes me up in the wee hours, every single night, for ten years plus now <

Hokay.
Young family out for a day's jolly in one of these things.
Hit side-on by a bunch of half-drunk hooleys in dad's borrowed (without permission) car.
What will the headlines say?

My complaint about computerized systems for choosing routes is that too often they are based on nonexistent roads. How is the driverless car going to realize that the road it is supposed to turn onto is nonexistent? Just wondering.

I watched in horror as FS went from 'possibly good'
to a final commitment in support of driverless commie cars.
I hate to point out that there will be hygiene issues
with any shared automobile scheme.
Do you really wanna get in a car that spent the evening as a
whorehouse for hookers behind Denny's? Or one that just delivered
a baby? Or a bunch of puking drunks?
No, the automobile is one of the last bastions of private space.
It is also one of the last places I can smoke and I doubt they will
allow that in your socialist car share progrom.

A problem that's as old as computer programing, your results are only as good as your software and data input.
Suppose I need to take the vehicle off the road onto unpaved country roads, or off road completely?

Yes, I understand that a communal driver-less car will almost certainly be smoke-free and I agree this is a true sacrifice! I have been forced to drive a company car while mine was in the shop and it can be done, no matter how distasteful.
I have lived most of my life living in a city and commuting to a factory far away in the country. A year ago I moved an hour closer to the plant, but there is still no easy public transport link.
As much as I love driving my car and being independent, I can see the day when this might not be possible. I would much rather depend on a driver-less car under my control than to depend on family and friends to transport me from point 'A' to point 'B'

2Legs' reaction about getting one home from the pub sounds like a typical answer, and it will presumably make women feel safer from taxi drivers late at night...
...But if they are being used to take people home from the pub, who is going to clean them or will they all soon quickly end up smelling of urine, alcohol and vomit?
Considering modern cars can't even cross the Solent without the burglar alarms going off constantly as soon as the ferry starts to rock, I'd still like to know how a driverless car would successfully get on the Isle of Wight ferry. They have to check in, fill in the impossibly-complex form, go to the right queuing lane, follow the guiding instructions of the ferry staff (who communicate purely by blinking) into where they will be parked, and whether it is on the upper, mezzanine or lower car deck, ensuring that is less than an inch gap between the car in front and behind.

I won't be using any form of communal car.
I shall be enjoying cycling without the usual bunch of aggressive overtakes and close passes from vehicles that are going to end taking twice the amount of time I do in commuting into the city.

Well, I don't want to enable you to continue smoking* , but If you got a job in the United Nations building in New York, you would find it to be one of the last big buildings in North America where smoking is permitted.
*Medical science has found potential uses for nicotine as well as Thalidomide. Plus, There are some very rare individuals who survive into their nineties despite smoking habits. Jeanne Calment gave up smoking when she was 114 because she didn't want to shorten her life . That Japanese guy who lived past 120 also smoked a little. I'm just pointing this out because many mysteries remain about what affects human health. For the vast majority of us, smoking causes unmitigated harm. Wouldn't it be nice to know, from an early age, what vices would harm you, and what vices might be neutral to beneficial?

If we trust robots to perform microsurgery on babies, then moving a truck along the motorway is child's play with a much larger margin for error, surely.

I'm concerned about driverless cars not realizing that you need to pull over to let an ambulance get through. And how about a funeral procession that is by custom allowed to pass through regardless of what the lights say..

I'm concerned about people like ones behind the google textmess problem getting into the system and indulging in computer vandalism with death dealing consequences just for the thrill of it all, 'the joy of being bad'.
