What would cause this? (terror in the kitchen)

I was away on business for a few days and returned to find the fridge door wide open and an exploded can of Fanta inside, sticky orange liquid everywhere.

What would cause a can of carbonated drink stored in a fridge for some days to explode without any external stimuli?

If for some reason the contents inside the can began to freeze then that could do it. If for some reason the contents were heavily contaminated such that microbial growth inside was possible then that could do it.

It's some sort of internal pressure explosion with the initial crack occurring at the top seal that tore into the side panel causing the rip down the side.

thirsty aliens, I imagine is the most sensible answer. smiley - alienfrown hmm. that might be an odd use of the word 'sensible', though. smiley - silly

A letter to the local cannery of this product, rife with
indignation and subtle suggestions of gross trauma and
stress suffered as a result of this incident. I'm sure
there are more horrific descriptors than yucky sticky stuff
which will put the fear of god into their PR people. They
will start by offering to replace the can with a bonus extra
dozen - and they'll ask you to bring in the evidence.

Include the pic and suggest, out of public concern, that they
might want to have their engineers investigate the cause before
someone gets very badly injured or incurs costly repairs and
replacements to the kitchen appliances.

Tell them however that you cannot allow the can to be handed
over to them until you have finished consulting with lawyers.
Do not actually talk to any lawyers until the supplier has made
some offer of compensation in exchange for the evidence and your
waiver of expectation of any further awards for costs and damages.

Should be worth the better part of a grand.

I once got $300 Cdn from Cadburys for a scrub brush bristle I found
imbedded in a Caramilk bar but that was thirty years ago and prices
will have gone up.

Good Luck with it.
smiley - cheers
