Do we really need powdered alcohol?

Yes, you read that right. Powdered alcohol... just add water.

Rum, vodka and a few premixed cocktails. So, do you think there is a market for this?

You can call me TC

Well, the explanation makes sense. The taste of the water will probably have quite an effect on the taste of the drink, though. I'd try it.

Not sure this isn't some kind of elaborate hoax.

Mixture of dried yeast and sugar, just add water and wait a couple of weeks... smiley - winkeye

This has actually been around in a similar form for a while, used when making alcopops. I don't think it's a good thing, because it's an expensive way of encouraging abuse.

Is that not better than a cheap way of encouraging abuse?

Does the expense matter to someone who's going to feed their addiction no matter what? Of course, sky-high price tags matter, but I doubt that these prices would be prohibitive....would they?

If you can make powder, you can make pills. Pop a couple of tablets with a glass of water?

They said the Space Age would be like this.

The idea of being able to get a hangover in a pill is not a good one.

In fact, it's rather scary. smiley - erm

I don't really have anything against this except personally it sounds like it will taste awful.

Me too,

What do you get if you try to take All the water out of alcohol? Nothing?
Won't the alcohol evaporate before the water?

Yes, but you can condense it again. You just need some appropriate glassware and stuff.

You can dehydrate without getting rid of other things.

I agree though, this may be some form of hoax. It does sound remarkably strange and utterly pointless

General Foods received a patent for powdered alcohol in 1976. So we can build it, we have the technology. smiley - winkeye

And a search of the interwebs have yielded several descriptions of previous attempts to market a product after the patent expired. So far, nobody seems much interested.

Perhaps survivalists would like a supply for their bunkers.

Powdered alcoholic drinks - whisky/brandy/etc I can believe, though I think I remember an experiment where we dried out some then 'reconstituted' the remaining solids with, er, alcohol. It tasted, well, not so good. Not so good at all.

but pure alcohol… nar, don't believe it until I see a proper, formally peer-reviewed, scientific account.

Pure alcohol is a liquid- they are not claiming it's pure
