I've just seen "Sing Street" as well, a free preview, which is always good because if you don't like the film you haven't wasted any money.

It's a really nice film about following your dreams and standing up to bullies. If you enjoy films like Gregory's Girl or Bend it Like Beckham, you'll enjoy Sing Street.

I just watched Gone Girl on DVD. The critics were so enthusiastic about it. I haven't read the book, and the film completely confused me. I have no idea what it was about. And this from someone who had no trouble following Inception or other complicated plots.

"Gone girl" is deeply disturbing, especially at the end. smiley - yikes

Maybe I'll have to watch it again then. As it turns out that none of the protagonists is the 'good guy' and they are all impossible to identify with, I felt too alienated to be disturbed by it.

"none of the protagonists is the 'good guy'" [TC]

That happens a lot, unfortunately. It seems to be a trend.

A few years ago there was another trend: movies created by people who had no sense of storytelling, so halfway into a movie you had no reason to see the last half because there was no apparent story line.

"10 Cloverfield Lane" - billed as a drama, there was only 3 characters in it. I only recognised John Goodman. It's part horror, part thriller, with something else going on that you don't find out until the very end. No spoilers here.

It was gripping, there were only a few moments when the tension let up, and then it was yanked straight back up to the ceiling.

Not my normal choice of film but it was very good indeed.

I considered that -- John Goodman chooses very good films to be in -- but I wanted to see other films more at the time.

Divergent: Allegiant

Having seen all the others, we were looking forward to this (me more so). Tris scrubs up pretty well and the CGI is great, I loved the invisible flying car/pods (I felt like Will Smith "I gotta get me one of these!") smiley - wow

However, I have a real issue with the actress - her expression did not change at all - I don't recall her being so robotic in the previous films, so I found what she was going through hard to empathise with. When one character dies, she should have been devastated - I think Ian and myself were more upset. Another scene, which would have broken my heart, not a flicker. Spoiled an otherwise great film for mesmiley - shrug

On Monday, I saw "Angry birds." On Tuesday, I saw "The Nice Guys."

I liked them both.

The cute factor of chicks in "Angry birds" pretty much requires a grumpy reaction smiley - erm. The mighty eagle turns out to be a dud, but he's way past his prime, so cut him some slack!

"Nice Guys" has some comic violence. All right, it has a *lot* of comic violence, much of it coming out of the blue or just plain smiley - weird.

"Me Before You" - a free preview, I believe it's released on the 3rd June.

A gentle romance, quite predictable in many ways, a weepy but with nice humourous touches and some stunning scenery. The whole cast is great, I can see Sam Claflin getting the kind of Hugh Grant rom com roles if he's not careful and Emilia Clarke is a delight.

Saw Hail Caesar yesterday. We both enjoyed it - an amusing pastiche. I can imagine some people not finding it as comic as billed.
Planning to see Anomalisa next weekend.

Do you think enjoyment of a film varies according to where & with whom you view it?

Saw Anomalisa last night. Hubby kept looking at his watch, so it obviously wasn't enthralling him - bit of moving around of other audience & some titters at the sex scene. I did think the movie was probably longer than it needed to be but I think I'd have enjoyed it far more either on my own or in the company of appreciative viewers.

I seem to enjoy or not a movie regardless of where or with whom I see it. Formats, however, are another matter. I normally go to theaters to see movies. If I see a movie on video, I think it suffers from the small screen and lack of surround sound.

Me too.

Yesterday we saw "High Rise" smiley - groan so yes, there is a film worse than Hail Caesar. Billed as a "drama" it was no more than pornographic horror. By half-way through, people were voting with their feet. We lasted 80 mins, before we had had enough (and having already seen the ending at the beginning of the film, where a survivor had taken a chainsaw to a dog and was roasting its hind quarters and a leg over an open fire, we had no stomach to sit through that again)smiley - ill

Last week we saw "The Man Who Knew Infinity" highly recommended even though your heart will break for himsmiley - brokenheart

Spotlight - I knew this was an Oscar-winner, and I have disagreed with that panel in the past so I went along with an open mind. Great film about dogged investigators digging deep despite threats to their personal well-being. I knew the harrowing back story and remember the fallout. It was great to see the exposure grow from seedling to fully grown tree. Well deserved awards, for once.

Haven't been to the cinema much at all lately - is it just me or is there not that much worth seeing these days?

Mind you, there is a very limited scope on the Venn diagramm where films I want to see and films hubbie wants to see actually overlap, and then I have to decide if I can bear watching it in the dubbed German version.

I've seen "Alice Through the Looking Glass" twice. It bears little resemblance to Lewis Carroll's plot lines, but I think it works fine on its own terms.

"Me Before You" was good, though the quadraplegic guy looked pretty well toned for someone in his condition. The enthusiasm of the woman who nursed him was refreshing.

"Captain America: Civil War" left me with mixed feelings. I like Chris Evans and Morton Downey Jr a lot, so I'm never reluctant to see them on screen. However, I'm not too keen on seeing them fight each *other*. smiley - sadface

"X-Men Apocalypse" was extraordinarily violent. I'm not sure that I buy the idea of this mutant with the powers of many being subdued enough to rest in his tomb in a pyramid until [surprise, surprise!] some nutcake fringe group summons him back to action. smiley - erm

I intend to avoid "Warcraft," "conjuring 2," and "Teenage Mutant Turtles."

I'm willing to see "Now you see me 2."

What is it with the sequels and the comic-book adaptations? smiley - huh
