BBC Online sites not distinctive enough. Is h2g2 distinctive enough? Or is it too much like wikipedia or e2?

"Applications developed by the BBC, such as DNA have also enabled user-generated content to be more stimulating for the user and more efficiently managed."

"DNA: an application server that was externally procured in 2000 providing a community message system where user generated content is categorised,
reviewed and commented upon by other users e.g. H2G2 site. DNA is currently being rolled out across the site to replace its predecessor
Howerd2: a message board application developed for BBC Online by BBC Technology that is the engine behind the site’s forums"

(Those are taken from the Graf report, in case it wasn't obvious.)

From that is it probably safe to say that if something's gonna go it'll be the messageboards?

Not really - all that means is that DNA will take over running the messageboards. It's what we're working on at the moment. And it won't happen overnight.

Hi Jim
Could it be that with the Message Boards gone http://www.bbc.co.uk/communicate/ will be a step nearer to becoming a home page for a united BBC Community powered by DNA the BBC's community website engine.smiley - smileyAncient Brit

I'll agree with that...

Post 11 is possibly the most reassuring 5 words I've ever seen on this site... especially when you look at who posted it.

The messageboards aren't going anywhere AB, as Jim said, they are simply moving to another platform (ie DNA). Some might fall by the wayside as we go, but some of the boards have a natural lifespan and close after a time anyway.

Although it's spookly reading those news pages, and seeing some of the sites I work with mentioned for one reason or another.

Could it be that the content and the community spirit of h2g2 will survive under the wing of DNA but the name may change to protect the innocent.

What change the name 'h2g2'? That's not likely to happen!

DNA could change name I suppose, but there wouldn't be a lot of point changing it, it would just confuse people...

But we're already confused, so what difference would it make smiley - tongueout
