It does sound like an odd statistic. If you're in New York it might well be true, as there is an abundance of New Yorkers and also a lack of sharks. Someone in San Diego however might have some very different odds.

Here's the supporting link for the Shark to New Yorker bite ratio.

But fatal shark attacks still remain incredibly rare — a person’s chance of being attacked by a shark in the U.S. is 1 in 11.5 million, and the chance of being killed by a bite is less than 1 in 264.1 million. In New York alone, people are bitten 10 times more each year by other people than worldwide by sharks. You’re far more likely to simply drown while swimming in the ocean — or die in a car crash on the way to the beach — than you are to be killed by a shark.

Yes, but is this information truly useless?
It sounds rather reassuring to me - particularly as I do not live in New York - or anywhere near an ocean.

If you create a simple substitution cipher by mirroring the alphabet, such as below:
a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z
z y x w v u t s r q p o n m l k j i h g f e d c b a
WIZARD spelled backwards and swapped is WIZARD.

Famous Last Words make for good useless facts. Roald Dahl's penultimate word's we're quite touching with his family gathered around his death bed. His actual final words were... less so.
From this source: http://nymag.com/arts/books/features/67962/index2.html
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In a hospital, surrounded by family, Dahl reassured everyone, sweetly, that he wasn’t afraid of death. “It’s just that I will miss you all so much,” he said—the perfect final words. Then, as everyone sat quietly around him, a nurse pricked him with a needle, and he said his actual last words: “Ow, !”
How about Oreos?
It was recently shown scientifically that Double Stuf Oreos only contain 1.86 times the "stuf" of an ordinary Oreo.
What does the J. stand for?
Michael J. Fox's middle name is....
Andrew.
(He picked the J. for SAG as they already had a Michael Fox and he didn't want to sound like he was calling himself "A Fox".)
