Sitcoms or drama series shot on old-fashioned videotape and then broadcast unaltered. Most stuff now is shot on video and then treated to look like film. It makes watching old British stuff a bit weird.

Interesting that someone a few pages ago mentioned "high profile meetings between the US and Russian presidents". For a few years after the collapse of the USSR, there was still a tendency to think of Russia as a superpower (the 1995 film "Crimson Tide" demonstrates this quite well) and meetings between Yeltsin and Clinton were treated by the media the same way that meetings between Reagan and Gorbachev had been. I'm not entirely sure when the penny dropped and the realtions between the two powers stopped being regarded as though they were still pivotal. I think it was around 1997 or 1998. The Asian financial crisis of '98 leading to the collapse of the Russian ruble (which made it starkly obvious what a wretched state the country was in) probably had something to do with it. Given the Russian revival of recent years, it'll be interesting to see if things change.

>Queues outside cinemas

Good one. I remember these from when I was a kid and I can't recall the last time I saw one or was in one. I think what happened was that the cinemas moved their ticket offices further into the buildings and took the queues with them. A sensible move that took a surprisingly long time to happen.

Another one: Sony Minidiscs.

There was an advert for these around 1994 featuring a straggly-haired rock act (who I think were Reef, who had a couple of hits from 1996-97 - the song used was certainly theirs) begin rejected by a smarmy be-suited exec. They didn't seem to take-off but I remember Radio One and other stations used them to play music from several years after their introduction (I recall a John Peel session by Super Furry Animals from 1998 in which John had problems with the minidisc :D). Not heard anything about them at all in the last few years.

I'm quite interested to know how they came to be used in radio and to what extent they made it into home stereos. I never knew anyone who had any or owned a system that played them.

My sister's got one. She insists on getting the discs too because it was a present and should be used.
Personally if someone gives me a useless present they will get thanked and then it will get mothballed smiley - sorry
(I know that's what happened to the set of speakers she got me for my mp3 player - I have a separates Hi Fi - why would I want to play my music compressed through a tiny set of cheap speakers? smiley - weird)

Don't knock the teeny set of speakers for your phone/ MP3 player!

They work during a power cut (as we discovered the other night when everyone had had enough of me playing "She'll be coming round the mountian" on the old acoustic guitar...)

Sho - employed again!

we have fantastic small speakers (Creative) for our (Creative Zen) mp3 player. It was fab on holiday when we had 20GB of music to listen to through absolutely brilliant speakers. (they really are good)

My dad uses a mini-disc player (portable) and also has a small radio/CD/minidisc combo (which I think doesn't work now). But now he's discovered the joys of an mp3 player which takes SD cards so I think it's going in the attic.

I have a mini-disc player / recorder. I used it to record all my old vinyl before recordable CD was a viable option. I'm now gradually transfering these recordings to CD.

I also had a Betamax player.

WTF is it with Sony?

Great gear but they always seem to go it alone and end up out on a limb. They also seem to specialise in Sony only conectivity. I can't think of an example right now but I know this has been a problem for me in the past.

Mr. Dreadful - But really I'm not actually your friend, but I am...

We had a stereo with a triple MiniDisc changer doohickey. And a portable MiniDisc player.

And we even got a couple of albums on MiniDisc from HMV.

This is the closest I have ever been to the cutting edge of technology.
