Wasn't Bergerac a bewagonned alcoholic? And didn't he get sacked from the police force at some point because some evil criminals put cannabis in his chocolate and he then went on a huge drunken bender?
He was then reinvented as a private eye, natch. Oh, and he caught the evil cannabis-toting criminals, too.
Battle of the cop show theme tunes. It must be done.

This was in the first episode of season three,"Ninety Per-Cent Proof",in which Bergerac was being set up to discredit his testimony in a forthcoming court case.There is a very good episode guide on www.tvtome.com.

Bergerac did get cannabis resin put into some chocs that he thought were from Susan Young (Louise Jameson who played his then girlfriend) while he was guarding some criminal at Jersey hospital. He wasn't sacked as Crozier (Sean Arnold) stood by him and they uncovered evidence that proved it was a stich-up!
