After 14 months the film was finished and became a modest success, though not the runaway success that RKO had hoped for. Plans for a proposed sequel, Mighty Joe Young Meets Tarzan, were shelved, although O'Brien was awarded the Best Special Effects Oscar in 1950.
I don't understand that - how was O'Brien awarded a Best Special Effects Oscar for a film that was shelved?

Sorry about the confusion there - Obie was awarded the Oscar for 'Mighty Joe Young'. Because of the date that the Oscars were held, he won the award after the film had been released and plans to make a sequel were scrapped.

Ah, then I'll tweak it a little:

I have also tweaked this section:
Sadly the effects money ran out before filming finished. To get around this, instead of seeing dramatic events, characters describe what the scorpions did next and in one sequence, a black cut-out shape chases people. The sequences that were made are outstanding, despite the cheapness of the models. A very unconvincing hand puppet was also used for close-ups of the scorpions' faces.

The sequences that were made are outstanding, despite the inferiority of the models.
That way you have the criticism then finish on a high note of praise

And I'm finished my subbing. Unless there's any other comments it's ready to return to the Eds for Final Polish stage. Thanks for writing this up, <BB<, it's a fascinating and tragic story which I am sure h2g2 readers will enjoy learning about

I've read through and think it works well. It is a tragic story which I learnt about while researching 'King Kong'.
