As no-one else has asked, what is the Island of Ireland Peace Park and what is the connection with Irish round towers?smiley - huh

A couple of years ago I went to an exhibition of paintings by a local artist who had visited all of England's round tower churches, which are mainly located in Sussex, Suffolk and Norfolk. They were mainly old, flint churches, many late Saxon.

The Island of Ireland Peace Park is a memorial park in Belgium to the Irish that were killed in the Great War. It was opened in 1998. It features a modern Irish Round Tower.

I'm reconsidering whether I should mention modern round towers built as memorials - there's the Peace Park one, there's one in Wexford commemorating the Crimean War, I think, and there's one in Glasnevin Cemetery in Dublin for the people who died in the cause of Irish freedom. There's also one in America somewhere.

The modern Round Tower might best be left as a follow up Entry, as this one focuses more on the historical lore.

Another incisive, interesting and informative Gnomon production smiley - ok

It doesn't really seem worth the effort to build these as refuges when they are so patently unsafe, especially from fire. The urge to build them must surely have been the ecstasy of height, that makes all the most striking mountains holy places.

I have a suspicion that building a high structure in any age is justified by various rational explanations, but undertaken largely from a desire to show importance.

Do 'modern round towers' include the Dublin Spire? Maybe a link would be no harm anyway smiley - smiley

Excellent entry!

I agree with Fsmiley - dolphinS that if you open this up to anything in existence that is Irish, Round and potentially towering you could be looking at infinite possibilities.

This is short and sweet.

An Irish round tower is a very specific thing. I would not be making the Entry too general by including modern ones. I'll add a short section mentioning the four I know of. When I get home.

"As expected, very well written.

Just one aspect I do not comprehend

>>there are two outstanding high crosses as well as the shaft of a third. The crosses have been moved into the visitor centre to protect them

Are these crosses standing tall, or in the visitor centre?
As well, are the crosses in the visiting centre to protect them from the Vikings, local Irish or from the weather?

It will be me smiley - silly not fully comprehending this phrase smiley - blush"

I've changed it to "protect them from the weather". I'll reword the part about moving the crosses to make it clearer once I get home.

Cool Old Guy, I've reworded the paragraph about Clonmacnoise to make the bit about the high crosses easier to understand.

OK, since people think that adding a section on modern Irish memorial Round Towers would not really be in keeping with this entry, I'll leave it as it is.

I now consider this entry complete, unless anyone has any more suggestions. I'll try and dig up a photo of a round tower, or will go out and take one.
