Entry: The Charter of the United Nations - A87856465
Author: Nosebagbadger {Ace} - U14077177

The first completed entry (it falls at number 3 in the order) of my new UN project. In a previous project it was suggested that it was better to submit these to PR as I finished them, rather than wait for a completed project.

Many of the places where I could add links just didn't seem to add anything to the entry, but if someone can see some suitable ones please point them out

All other comments and corrections welcome of course smiley - smiley

An excellent read that makes me look forward to reading the rest of the project! Yes, I agree it probably is easier and better to put them through individually, like you did with the Olympic Events, and we can link them at the end.

I won't concentrate too much on typos other than to mention one sentence near the start which seems to be missing something - possibly the Battle of Britain?
'Britain in ruins only 9 months after the end of the Yet'

I look forward to reading more, and it is good to see you writing again.smiley - smiley

Ah yes, Battle of Britain just wasn't showing up due to an error in my GuideML.

Also fixed some notations to myself inside the text (same system I use in my essay-writing, but without the pressure to check carefully that comes from a threat of plagarism!)

And yes, it has been far too long since I've got some entries through the system, got a long holiday with an extremely dull accreditation course, so hopefully the procrastination shall drive things forward! smiley - winkeye

Several minor edits made. I've not linked to the League of Nations, which I've also just added to PR, since I think I'm right in saying that the links wouldn't work when one was picked.

My thinking was that when the project as a whole was finished with all the entries in the Guide (hopefully that day will come!) I could provide a list of where inter-entry links would go, as well as those on top of each page(?)

I do like this entry

Perhaps I could suggest that you could enlarge the opening paragraph a just a little

The foundation of the League of Nations was inspired by Immanuel Kant's Philosophical Sketch "The Perpetual Peace", and was to form shortly after the new year in 1920. Destined to last only 26 years later it would formally dissolve to be replaced with the United Nations. Below are the stories of its founding, purpose, successes and failures before its eventual collapse.

Hi Bob - was that comment intended for the other entry? (I know, chatting about the League above not helping clarity there!)

The UN Charter would be signed by 50 nations on the 26th June 1945 to come into effect on the 24th October. You might notice something here - the date of signing is actually before the formal end of World War 2. Yet the road to the creation of the Charter that stands 70 years on was started in the midst of the darkest hour of the war.

This part just a little expansion - dates of WWII, 50 nations a list or a link to find one would be good. Did any nation notably refuse to join, or were those who did not join were simply not invited? that sort of thing.

Excellent entry well done smiley - cheers

This looks good. It's ironic that an organisation intended to keep the peace was initially an exclusive club open only to countries who had declared war!

There's a couple of odd errors in the first part:

"It can be summarised in roughly six notable steps" - you then provide us with seven bullet points.

"signed by 50 nations on the 26th June 1945 [...] So, back to June 25th" - I appreciate that both dates may be relevant, but this doesn't quite make sense.

Various edits made, including the 6/7 points and (i think) the dating.

(That was just a note that on the 26th it was signed, but the final meeting started the day before)

Well done! And what a great topic for a project! I'm sure while nearly everyone has heard of the United Nations, not half understand much about it, or exactly what they do in any degree of detail.

Only one typo stood out, in the Interesting Fact I think where it says 'military plan' you might have meant 'military plane'?

Out of curiosity, what happens when a chapter is removed?

Gnomon - time to move on

This is good stuff.

I think it might be improved by an initial paragraph about the UN, saying what it is and that it was set up when the charter was signed.

Will do a summary of the UN

When a chapter is removed, everyone else will have to move up.

For those of us who do Model United Nations, in the rare occasions where you actually write out a suggested alteration to the UN Charter, the rules require you write in every single alteration - which means a painful number of alterations.

I mean, they could decide to leave as is, if they wanted to leave the chapter headings in to show that these chapters have been fulfilled, but we've not seen any sign of that - we'll have to wait until a serious amendment starts being discussed

To link to an h2g2 entry in a post, just:

1) put the A number of the entry eg A87856465
2) make sure it is not the first thing on the line (not a problem in old skins but it won't become a link in Pliny if it is first on the line).
