I've added what the women's world record is, as that time actually happened at the Great South Run.

Unfortunately 10-miles is not an IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations) recognised distance, even though the Great South Run is an IAAF Gold Label race. That seems to mean that any 10-mile world records that happen at a non-IAAF race don't count.

Thanks <BB< - I like to know what the speed is, and that is impressive that the record is more than 10 miles an hour.

Yes, I ran it last year. I'm considering doing it again this year, but at over £40 it is a bit on the expensive side...

(By a coincidence I'm currently wearing the T-shirt I got for finishing)

Cool old Guy smiley - cogs confused by another new word
"It may be me, just not knowing every rarely used word. Some years ago I just left it there, trying to understand the text by interpreting the rest of it. Currently if I just do not know it and trying to find the meaning only gives more confusion. So here goes:

>>the world's flatest world-class 10-mile run

What is a 'flatest'? a typo meaning: flattest? or latest? Or is it acually something else.

>>along the north of the common and the canoe lake

'the common' The common what? common as in normal, casual, universal ?
'canoe lake' Seems to be the name of a place or a 'nick name' ?

>>jelly babies

I think these are candy? Something Doctor Who related . . .

You mention there is an Entrance Fee, probably also a registration procedure? Have a great smiley - run"

Thanks for your comments there. A 'Common' is a fairly common word for ground used as a park or recreational space, as historically towns/manors used to have common land on which commoners had certain rights. Perhaps the most famous common is Wimbledon Common, where Wombles live. The run starts and ends at Southsea Common. I've also run through Southampton Common when doing a half marathon, and the London to Brighton bike ride starts at Clapham Common.

I think 'canoe lake' is more a description (a lake where you canoe) rather than an official name. Many tourist towns in England have a canoe lake, so visitors can canoe (although these are often either now overgrown or dominated by paddleboats)

Jelly babies are a fairly common sweet. I've also been given Jelly Babies when doing the Southampton Half Marathon, but not in the same quantity as in the Great South Run. What makes them particularly suitable for runners I've no idea, but I suppose the Fourth Doctor favoured them as he did so enjoy running down corridors. The Twelfth Doctor also had some in last year's episode 'Mummy on the Orient Express', but the Eleventh Doctor preferred Jammy Dodgers instead.

Most of the registration takes place online when you sign up, on the day all you have to do is turn up to the right place in plenty of time and make sure you are wearing your number bib and have your timer chip. Many runs combine the chip as part of the bib, so it wouldn't surprise me if the Great South Run follows suit.

I read this again, and in relation to the common, I think you would be better writing it as Common, or even repeating Southsea Common, as it isn't just any common, but a specific one you're mentioning. smiley - ok

You could link to A5142520 on jelly babies smiley - biggrin

"world's flatest world-class 10-mile run" - you could just say "flattest world-class ten-mile run"

The sentence beginning "With many historic attractions nearby including the dockyards" has no particular ending - were you going to say something like With... it is well worth spending more time in the area"?

"The spectators make the run interactive even for the supporters" - who are the supporters? the people involved in the staging of the event?

smiley - ok
