5 Conversations

The geniuses over at the Alternative Writing Workshop have done it again – come up with the perfect Olympic challenge.

We give it a 10.

The first crop of haiku are [is?] promising. Keep 'em coming at the bottom of this page.

The Olympic torch by Bogie

The AWW Poets' Olympic Haiku Challenge

Instructions:

The aim is to collect as many haikus about sport as possible. If you've forgotten, a haiku is a three-line poem of Japanese origin. The first line has five syllables, the second seven and the third five. Each haiku should describe a sport of your choice, and it would be wonderful if we could cover all the Olympic sports between us. – Minorvogonpoet

100m

Tape against my chest
Less than ten seconds in flight
Sunlight on my face

Javelin

From my hand, a spear.
Above me, birds against clouds
A distant cheering.

The Hammer

The weapon of Thor,
Arcs towards the oval sky,
Towards ancient Gods.

Swimming

Flow around me, through,
I arc my body forwards.
The blue waters part.

Diving

Jumping backwards I
See sky, water, sky and
Vanish without trace.

The Beam

The narrow tree branch,
My body flexes with it
Now we are as one.

Judo

Starched white kimonos
Scurry like crabs across dojo
Then throw! – that's judo

Football

Britain's brave heroes
Kick ball, lose on penalties
Go home as zeroes.
