It's the day when we are supposed to celebrate the life and works of our founder, yon Douglas Noel Adams.
I'm not quite sure when it is though. The original proposition was for the last Friday in May, but others go with the 11th of May, seeing as that was the day of DNA's demise in 2001.

Last Towel Day I was in the middle of a cycling holiday in Sweden. I hung my towel out visibly on my back carrier, but I didn't see any others on display nor did anyone remark on mine. So rural Sweden does not celebrate Towel Day enthusiastically
