Just how long is long?

First sentence: In Western societies especially, privacy has been long regarded as an essential component of democracy.
Really? How long?
How about just a couple of generations ago, when people lived all in small towns or villages? And everybody knew everybody's business? Probably not a lot of privacy there.
And much before that, life was like camping with your entire extended family. And people lived in huts, yurts or tents. Barely any privacy at all.
I'm not sure how privacy is necessary to democracy. Democracies work best when information is freely available. Surely privacy is much more necessary to a dictatorship and absolutely vital to an oligarchy posing as a democracy.
