Apollo

I'm a trumpet player, and a pretty decent one at that. I've done marching shows in stadiums throughout the States, pit orchestra in plays at the local University, and I LOVE jazz band!! Improvisation is the greatest expression a musician can make...
I'm a fan of Copland and Del Borgo, I love playing anything by Don Ellis!! I like most types of music, with the exception of marches!! No offense to Mr. Sousa, but I really would enjoy life much more without those blasted things....
All i want from u guys is advice on what i can do, and what you can do for me....

I play alto sax, mainly. Some clarinet, recorder etc. In a jazz rehearsal band which gigs occasionally - not frequently enough though. Also like funk/latin very much. Other stuff too - opera included!

Fave muso - Stan Getz. Fave composer - Hoagy Carmichael (out of loyalty). Horace Silver.

Get out of MuG? Meet other musos perhaps.

Welcome, Apollo and Juliet! You're both members of the Musicians Guild now. smiley - smiley

If you would like to advertising your membership on your personal page, we have a graphic you can use. Instruction for this are at http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A434648

You should also check out the main page. We keep a list of upcoming concerts by our members, links to interesting new entries on music, and whatever else hits our fancy. And of course, you can use the main page to chat with our other members about whatever you like. It's at http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/U150368

Finally, we keep a directory of all the music-related entries in h2g2 at http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A425161

We have surprisingly few entries on jazz music at h2g2, despite the fact that we have several jazz fans in the Musicians Guild. You can look over our Directory if you don't believe me. Of course, anything you can due to rectify this situation would be greatly appreciated. smiley - winkeye

We're a little quiet now, because the Guild was just put back in order a couple of days ago. But do come back and visit us now and then, as things will begin snowballing soon. Thanks! smiley - smiley

Hi everyone!

I'm Aimée (see http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/U171074)

I play the piano @ ABRSM Grade 5/6 (just took the grade 6 and am praying I passed...) I also play the clarinet a bit, but I'm not particularly good smiley - smiley

My favourite genres of music are jazz & blues and soft rock. My favourite artist has to be Sarah McLachlan (who nobody has heard of in Scotland apart from her song with Delirium...).

I'm hoping to 'learn' how to improvise - I can improvise jazz, but only with my voice :-o

That's all folks. And no, I can't program to save my life. Soreeeee!

DUOTWR

Hello,

fabulous, the musicians guild. Was a member of this back in the old days, but I've been away for some time.

A quick breakdown.

Instrument: Mainly piano, sing in a chorus as well (first bass) I am about to join the H2G2 choral society.

I play for a dancing school, accompanying ballet and tap dancing. Have been doing it for many years, and it funded me through my time at University (where, for some unknown reason, I was doing engineering ?!?!). Have played for some opera as well (my greatest musical love.)

Musical Genres: Well, Italian opera is my favourite, inevitably Verdi. Also love symphonic music. Russian stuff especially, Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky. Love Richard Strauss and Mahler. Twentieth century music is amongst some of my favourite, although I have an intellectual appreciation of Bach. I never fail to be impressed by his skill.

Something I want from the Guild: Not in particular, just fellow enthusiasts.

Have just noticed that this post makes me sound like a pompous git. I'm not really, like everything else in life, if you take things too seriously you kill of the interest.

Welcome, DUOTWR. If you were a member before, which one were you?

Anyway, welcome back! smiley - smiley

Joanna also loves Russian composers especially, so you may want to drop by and say hello if you don't already know her. It must be very cool indeed to be both a piano player and a dancer.

As for me, I love Bach! He was a genius, we just don't give the old guy enough credit, eh? smiley - winkeye

And no, you don't sound like a pompous git. You sound enthusiastic and happy, much like the many jazz and rock fans who love to go on about their favorite groups and individuals.

T.C. Burgerpants

Hello there!
I'm T.C. and I'm one of those "new this week" persons. So I am still getting to know my way around the site, and this is my first attempt at getting plugged in.

1) I play the guitar though I started my musical career on the piano. I took one year of trumpet in thr 4th grade and didn't like it.
2) My favorite artist right now (it changes rapidly) is Jennifer Knapp. So far, she holds the record for being the longest time running of T.C.'s Favorites. I also really like the Dave Matthews Band. I play mostly rock, alternative, and what I call folk. Everyone else in Arkansas wants to call it country or bluegrass . . . which I refuse to accept (not being originally FROM Arkansas). I am in a band that I formed at my church
[link removed]
3) What I want from the guild . . . um, to get plugged in though something that I have a great deal of interest in. I haven't looked at GuideML, but I'm pretty good with HTML (I maintain the above site). . . though my time is limited (I'm finishing up a Masters Degree)

Glad to be here!
T.C.

Welcome, T.C. Burgerpants! I like the Dave Matthews Band also. My boyfriend is from New Jersey, and so I know what you mean about folk/country music. He hates anything called country, but will admit to liking several artists lumped in the 'country' category when they are played on his local radio station. Odd, isn't it?

You're accepted into the Musicians Guild, of course. I've added your name to our membership roster. smiley - smiley

Finally, our list of h2g2 entries about music is at http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A425161 Of course, I'm always looking for new and interesting things, so do let me know if you decide to write anything about music.

Again, welcome to the Musicians Guild and h2g2.

Tabitca

I don't think I can join because i am tone deaf and don't play anything...BIG SIGH
I love rock music and opera.
I lost my hearing for a while at Glastonbury a few years back when I stood too close to a speaker...my ears rang for days...but it was musical.
My cat can sing better than me but I could listen and be the appreciative audience!

Bigalibi (Muse of Antiquated Swimming Strokes & MuG)

Hello, Guild, I'd like to apply for membership, if I may?
Credentials:- I play rhythm (acoustic) guitar both 6 & 12 string; mandolin, bodhran, pennywhistle (a little) and about 2 tunes on the harmonica. I've also been a member of my church choir for nearly 25 years, joining as a boy soprano, and gravitating to the giddy depths of basso profundo (obnoxio).
Musical favourites include most folk music, classical (sacred and secular), modern Jazz and classic rock.
What I hope to get out of the Guild is the chance to chat with fellow musical peeps (performers AND listeners) and exchange info and opinions.
Thank yousmiley - smiley

h2g2 Musicians Guild

Welcome, Tabitca and bigalibi! I've accepted you both into the Musicians Guild. Your names are now listed on our membership roster.

Tabitca, despite the sound of our name, we really don't discriminate. If you love music, then you're in the right place. After all, our musicians are nothing without great fans. And some of our most prolific (and interesting) members are die-hard fans of certain music groups or genres (Beatles, Beach Boys, heavy metal). In any case, you're blessed to have a cat with a good voice. My cat sounds horrible! But he persists anyway. smiley - smiley

bigalibi, you're definitely our first bodhran player. And it must have been a very interesting experience going through your voice change! I can't even imagine. But then, I'm a girl smiley - winkeye If you're looking for Guild members with interests similar to yours, I recommend looking for entries that appeal to you at http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A425161

The name of the writer is always listed at the top of the entry. So pop by and say hello to whoever you like.

If you want to put our group graphic on your page, the instructions are at:

Inter

I'd like to join the Musicians guild for the simple reason that music is the thing that keeps me going.

1. I play the trombone mainly, but also guitar, piano, keyboards and basically anything brass.

2. My favourite genre is without any single doubt Progressive Rock. My favourite artists within this genre must be Marillion, Fish [snip] The list goes on and on and on.

3. Get something out of Musicians Guild? Discussing music is always nice.

Dolphin Girl: Patron Saint of Incoherent Ramblings; Keeper of Flutes and Singing Watches

I agree with the above reason - music is my life and it keeps me sane (well...less crazy).
1) I play flute, piano and sing (have also been known to play different types of recorders and piccolo).
2) I love all sorts of music. But to play on the flute I love Hungarian and Romanian music (esp. Doppler's Hungarian Pastoral Fantasy)
3)Talking about music with like-minded individuals. Basically I live, breathe, eat and drink music.

h2g2 Musicians Guild

Well, it looks like we have some more interesting variety in our members today! Congrats to Inter, Dolphin Girl, and Suz. You've all been accepted into the Musicians Guild.

If you want to put our group graphic on your page, the instructions are at:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A434648

Since you all seem keen on discussing music in general, I'll point you to a few recent discussions. On this page, there is a thread called 'A question for you' which asks what kind of music you like to listen to while driving.

On the main page, a Researcher is seeking knowledge of good female drummers. Do you know any?

The Guild's main page is at:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/U150368

And we are also trying to collect names of songs about musical instruments at:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A438581

And if you just want to browse around for a while, our directory of music entries is at http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A425161

Welcome to the Guild, all. And thanks for joining. smiley - smiley
