I wrote this paper some time ago as I was interested to find out why it was that non-members thought it was secret organisation rather than private.
This paper is just a straight-forward explanantion of why the United Grand Lodge of England had adopted a private facade after the war, one which I should add was officially dropped more than 20 years ago.

If anyone is interested in actually finding out about Freemasonry, as well as visiting the websites of the United Grand Lodge of England www.grandlodge-england.org/ , Grand Lodge of Scotland www.grandlodgescotland.com/ and the Grand Lodge of Ireland www.irish-freemasons.org/ you can also visit one of the many Masonic discussion Forums on the internet such as www.thefreemason.com/forum

Quite right. The vast majority of English Freemasons are members of The United Grand Lodge of England.
To avoid any confusion or misunderstanding, the Grand Lodge of All England, at York wishes to confirm that it has no connection whatsoever with the United Grand Lodge of England, or its satellite Grand Lodges, either at home and abroad.
