Why does my bath plug have a hole in it?

Post 1

The Groob

I bought a bath plug. The black knobby thing up the top is actually the top of a kind of shaft that slides up and down through a hole. So there's basically a hole (albeit a small one) and it leaks. What's behind this idea?

Had to go and have a look at mine...

It's built the same way, however the central bit is a tight fit in the hole so it doesn't leak.

I think you may have a duff one.

PS
I guess it is built that way as the two parts seem to be different plastics, the centre core is solid and doesn't give, presumably to stop the chain ripping out of it, while the main part of the plug seems more flexible to give a good seal.

That seems to make sense, Baldy!

Seems a slightly odd idea, though. Bit of a faff, really. I'd rather have one solid piece of plastic.

I remember Michael Palin crossing all of Russia in search of a proper bath plug, one without holes.
