Identify a butterfly

Post 1

I glimpsed a butterfly this morning, struck me as unusual. It looked a plain bright coppery red colour, small to medium size.
The only one I can see in my book as possible is a copper, supposedly extinct in the UK. But with the recent warm weather coming up from the continent, I wonder if some visitors have come too?

A vagrant Large Copper's a possibility, with the warm southerly weather we've been having. Or it may have been another reintroduction attempt in your area? Check out your local nature society - they'll be able to help.

Could it have been a steampunk butterfly? Did you see it emit small jets of vapour?

I guess that's more likely although I thought the wings looked plain. Hope I can spot it again & get a closer look!
