Having listened to a good, free Treasure Island audiobook, I thought I'd try Robinson Crusoe; but was disappointed by the style of the narrator.
Can anyone recommend particular audio classics?

For readings, I suggest the Librivox project, in which volunteers read public domain audiobooks, poetry, etc. Our good friend Belana volunteers there:

For dramatisations, well, you may find a few 'dramatic readings' on Librivox, but for these I suggest you keep an eye on BBC Radio shows on iPlayer. You'll find them on BBC Radio 4 Extra, mostly. They appear on the schedules a week in advance, and stay available for a month after broadcast.
Currently ongoing, for example, are:
Gaston Leroux - Phantom of the Opera: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b008hvvp
Victor Hugo - Les Miserables:

A couple of George MacDonald Fraser's Flashman novels:

Available from previous weeks are:
Evelyn Waugh - Brideshead Revisited:

RF Delderfield - To Serve Them All My Days:

Dick Francis - Bolt:

etc.

Not strictly audiobooks, they're actually recordings of BBC Radio Plays, but The Hobbit (5 CD) and The Lord of the Rings (13 CD) are brilliant

I've recently come across some audio classics for children in Oxfam. Might be worth a look in similar charity shops.
