I recall reading about the first machines developed to automate the production of shirts, and thus multiply the output many times over. One skeptic asked, "Who will buy all these shirts? Everybody has what they need, one for work and one for home." While this sounds humorous to those of us with closets full of shirts, F. Scott Fitzgerald seemd to play on this view in "The Great Gatsby", where Daisy is overwhelmed by Gatsby's collection of a zillion shirts.
