I disagree that Morte D'Arthur is the most important bit of Arthurian myth in the English language. While it is one of the best-known, I think that earlier versions are both more interesting (rank personal opinion) and more important. Without the foundations there would have been no Morte D'Arthur. While Malory is certainly preferable to some of the French silliness which preceeded him, his take on sweat and blood comes right from earlier, gutsier pieces.
Well, I realize that my opinion is nothing more than that- utter personal preference, but I just cant choose Malory over old english.
