That's lucky. That doesn't really happen here. Some buses only go every hour, and there's no guarantee that you won't have to change half way anyway.
My town's nowhere near the size of Bristol and you can't even get a bus from one side of it to the other. You have to get one that takes you into the town centre, and change to another to take you out again. Useless!

as a child i lived in a town with similar problems then another group started another bus service giving healthy competition

That was lucky. Though there's only one bus company in Northern Ireland, so the chances of that happening are, unfortunately, practically nill.
The one good thing is that they are pretty much on time.
