The Clovis people were thought to be the earliest human inhabitants of North America, who disappeared about 13000 years ago, about the same time as about 35 species of mammals, including mammaths, mastodons and sabre-toothed tigers.


Controversial research (published in Nature, Jan 2008) now suggests that these were wiped out by a comet impact:
