My friend and I have tried to follow this pattern for turning the heel,but it does'nt seem to make sense.can someone help. it says that you should use all 30 stitches up,and then it says you should have 18 stitches left, can you help

For some reason it's like that in most Flap and Gusset Heel socks, but advice from a friend and fellow knitter, Lynne, just knit all the stitches from the side of the socks then decrease the 'extra' stitches (I do it where the heel begins and ends so it's nicely disguised) What I do is mark the extras on a piece of paper and tick them off when I decrease.

So you have just knitted the flap. yes? Are you trying to shape the heel?

I found this so confusing myself.
Considering that this is a pattern for beginners, I dont think it is very clear.
I tried about ten times and I always ended up with 10 stitches on the left needle and 8 on the right. I could not pick up and knitt the 15 stitches on the edge and it only shaped half the heel.

The pattern for the heel should look like this:

Row 1: Slip first stitch, Purl 16, Purl 2 together, Purl 1, turn
Row 2: Slip first stitch, Knit 5, slip 2 stitches from right hand needle onto the left hand needle and knit the 2 stitches together, knit 1, turn
Row 3: Slip first stitch, Purl 6, Purl 2 together, Purl 1, turn
Row 4: Slip first stitch, Knit 7, slip 2 stitches from right hand needle onto the left hand needle and knit the 2 stitches together, knit 1, turn
Row 5: Slip first stitch, Purl 8, Purl 2 together, Purl 1, turn
Row 6: Slip first stitch, Knit 9, slip 2 stitches from right hand needle onto the left hand needle and knit the 2 stitches together, knit 1, turn
Row 7: Slip first stitch, Purl 10, Purl 2 together, Purl 1, turn
Row 8: Slip first stitch, Knit 11, slip 2 stitches from right hand needle onto the left hand needle and knit the 2 stitches together, knit 1, turn
Row 9: Slip first stitch, Purl 12, Purl 2 together, Purl 1, turn
Row 10: Slip first stitch, Knit 13, slip 2 stitches from right hand needle onto the left hand needle and knit the 2 stitches together, knit 1, turn
Row 11: Slip first stitch, Purl 14, Purl 2 together, Purl 1, turn
Row 12: Slip first stitch, Knit 15, slip 2 stitches from right hand needle onto the left hand needle and knit the 2 stitches together, knit 1, turn
Row 13: Slip first stitch, Purl 16, Purl 2 together, Purl 1, turn

I think I either ended on Row 12/13/14. But that is basically where I went wrong. I didnt increase the number of purls or knitts evey row. (I dont think the pattern is very clear)

Are you using 2 needles or 4?

I always use 4 needles.
I tried with 2, but found the seeming so annoying and uncomfortable

This pattern should work perfectly on four needles, I've knitted this pattern many times, I really can't see the problem you're having
