Not that I do socks often (heels and toes scare me) but I've done legwarmers. And I use five needles. Four on the "tube" and one to knit, if you see... the fifth "taking over" from one of the four on the tube...

I have done 5 before now, but for some reason I prefer 4, I guess it depends on how many stitches you have. Thanks for reading the piece and to be honest the thought of turning a heel terrified me too, but it was so easy once I conqured it

I've never knitted anything in my life, but your article has prompted me to consider trying my hand at some socks, when I have time.
Probably have other priorities right now, so I'll continue to buy ready-made socks for the time being.
