Do NOT try this at home (2 Weeks Ago)Idly reading a reputable on-line newspaper, I came across an ad for wrinkle cream. DO NOT ANSWER SUCH ADS. It was probably directed at me because I have been enquiring about annuities and equity release. Careful reading of the small print suggested I would be asked for my opinion in return for a small sample. DO NOT ANSWER SUCH ADS. So I sent off for the sample and started using it. Very nice gel that sinks into the skin and makes it feel very soft. No request for opinion, and I assumed they'd made a mistake. THEY HADN'T. I had a phone call from my bank on Thursday asking if I'd authorised a payment of £97 (ninety-seven pounds) to these people. So payment denied and new card arrived yesterday which I have just activated. Speaking to friends in the village revealed several less fortunate - their banks were not as on the ball as HSBC. So, live with the wrinkles folks and DO NPT ANSWER SUCH ADS. Sat here this morning drinking strong coffee from one of the very rare Solidarnosc/British Council mugs I had made in Lincoln for that course, I was wondering what had happened to the participants. I don't think any of us thought of the EU expanding so fast, so some of them may be in England where they are contributing to the decline of the crime rate - this morning's papers report that areas with large numbers of eastern European immigrants have substantially less crime than others. So I have just completed my second afternoon (12-5pm)working in the cathedral shop. I think it is one of the world's most beautiful buildings and yesterday afternoon we got to hear the organist practising for the BBC broadcast in the evening. I have rapidly got up to speed with some of the local history, including the earthquake of 1185. When the cathedral was rebuilt after that, lead covered wooden spires were put on top of all three towers. The central tower thus became the tallest building in the world until 1548 when the spire blew down. As the building is floodlit at night and is on the top of a (very) steep hill it still looks pretty impressive. It is usually impossible to buy any duck products anywhere in the vicinity, but a friend has just given me half a dozen enormous duck eggs she picked up at the car boot sale at Market Rasen race course. I'm sorry to say you didn't win the wine but you did win am Easter egg." It's a Green and Black's organic. No children in the vicinity. How long can I eke it out? (I'm diabetic, so have to go back to the days of my extreme youth when eggs were rationed to about a tablespoon a day)What's more- the sun's out and it's about 4 degrees out there.
