The home of the Sprout Hi You have got through to the page of Sprout. This page is best viewed in alabaster or brunel I suspect. In the real world I live in Belgium (chipsandmayonnaisesmiley). Which is not as dull as some people might think. I work for a big organisation on environmental law issues. In smiley terms this makes me an If I'm on the site, you might find me contributing in Peer Review or Ask H2G2. But I quite like to lurk around, read the Post, that sort of thing. I sometimes post at work but the articles are written at home. I might start an ALT TAB fan club for other researchers who are keeping one eye over their shoulder while they post I have an involvement with the Underguide scheme for hootoo. Why not comment on creative, non Edited Guide writing in the Alternative Writing Workshop? For even more evidence of the amount of interesting stuff hiding in the shadows of Hootoo, use this. Of course sometimes it's just rubbish, but that's life... I'm a dedicated follower of H2G2's two fantasy football leagues. Recently I have been consistently in the top three or so, but have only won once. For a more personal journal of my travels in Africa, you can read the archive of Post articles contained here. I've put the graphic for it below. Or for some strange mountaineering stories, try here. It comes with a nice picture, exhibited below.
Another little project is best explained by the following: The Hootoo archives contain many weird and wonderful bits of writing, which don't always get the attention they deserve. Unless they enter the Edited Guide, or are unearthed by The Post, Underguide or CAC, they may lie unread and unloved for years, while their authors go out for a sandwich or even permanently Elvis1. The best way to find these gems is undoubtedly through the search engine, having ticked the box marked no Edited entries. The infinite improbability engine and searching conversations provides too much dross: searching unedited guide entries is the way to go.
A life in articles The sprout was brought up in a small town near Bristol. There wasn't much to do, but you can play West Country Skittles, England, UK Later on I lived in France for a couple of years, in Bordeaux, Gironde, France mainly. I spent quite a bit of time in the mountains Digging a Snow Shelter and Avoiding Avalanches - Basic Safety and Survival Tips. One of my favourite spots is Briançon, Hautes Alpes, France. I also wrote Writing a Letter to the British Government . I worked for the UK Civil Service before moving to Belgium and the article hopefully gives you an inside view on how to get the most out of your letter. I have spent a bit of time in airports recently with work - and this got me wondering - why are they so badly designed? Why does the bus from the plane take me to the other end of the airport from where I need to be? Why can't I buy a stamp? This rant is the result. People have been talking about this Guide Entry. When we bought the house, we could afford to get the core done, but the top and bottom of the house had to wait. So far total time invested after the kids go to bed and occasionally at weekends = Twenty hours of demolition and disposal in the attic (amusingish but very dusty - about another twenty to go). And about thirty hours of demolition and disposal in the cellar, followed by about fifteen hours of cleaning and tidying so far. To be followed by about the same again of that kind of work, followed about forty hours of painting? It's the getting dirty every evening that bugs me more than anything. Saves a lot of money though, and there is some satisfaction in seeing the work done - I'll have to put a chair in the cellar to admire it properly. sprout Click here to discuss this (3 replies, Latest reply: Dec 18, 2012) Daddy, is it better to be squashed by a brontosaurus, or eaten by a T Rex? (Nov 1, 2012) If you lived millions of years ago. I opted for the bronto, as I thought it would be quicker. A agreed, and he informed me that they weighed 30 tonnes? Surely not? I also have the feeling that a T Tex would be a messy eater - wouldn't want to be half eaten and tossed aside. This is the first Najoblomo entry - tomorrow, more philosophic... sprout Click here to discuss this (17 replies, Latest reply: Nov 20, 2012) Teething (Oct 16, 2012) Had my wisdom teeth out on Friday. Not as bad as was predicted, but I'm now very bored with soup and ice cream and swallowing pills. Still the children enjoyed playing doctor, bringing me ice packs and the like. Bless em. Other than that, 25,000 words into the novel, which i'm enjoying, but it does put other projects on hold. The challenge, as always, is to find an ending and tie all the knots and McGuffins together! And I voted in Belgium for the first time on Sunday. Voting is simple but the outcome is confusing - all the parties are in different coalitions with each other in different municipalities... sprout Click here to discuss this (2 replies, Latest reply: Oct 16, 2012) less hootoo time, but for the right reasons (Jun 15, 2012) Have been doing quite a bit of stuff. Busy at work, but in a good way - nice range of issues, good team - can't complain. And at home, have been working on a longer piece of writing - a book basically. It's about a cycle courier in a dystopian society, post climate change - but it's treated lightly. I don't harbour any illusions of publishing it in any way other than free, but it's a good new challenge to try and keep the energy and coherence. Away from the computer, it's birthday party season and then holidays - no more work on the house at the moment, apart from suing the bloke who made the mess of the chimney... Vegetable patch has been half successful - but we've learnt a lot for next year, and it's all good fun. Wish I'd known about pruning the pear tree though <nopear>... sprout Click here to discuss this (No replies) Bad car week (Feb 3, 2012) Wednesday morning. It's cold and we're late out of the house. Put kids in car. Car won't start. I take kids on tram/bus/school/bus/kindergarten oddysey, Mrs Sprout walks to local garage. Thurs night - garage gives us keys to repaired car. Friday morning. It's cold but we're not too late. Put kids in car. Giant Aldi lorry scrapes all the way down the side of the car, whilst trying to go round a corner. Gets stuck across the crossroad. I take kids on tram/bus/school/bus/kindergarten oddysey, Mrs Sprout sorts out papers. Car needs to go to garage next week... Fun week. sprout Click here to discuss this (2 replies, Latest reply: Feb 3, 2012) Click here to see more Journal Entries Most Recent Conversations
