Grr. My son just bought a motorbike... (Jul 10, 2008)

doh

It arrived yesterday, out of the blue with two big burly tatooed men. I thought they had the wrong address, but no, it was Alex - on the quiet, not a mention. Grr.

Peta says: Goodbye h2g2! And thanks for everything... (Jul 1, 2008)
Hi h2g2-ers.

This is just to let you all know that I'm leaving the BBC at the end of July, it's been a long run, time to move on now.

I've been working with people and online communities since 1999 when I had the great pleasure to work with Douglas Adams at The Digital Village, on h2g2.

As many of you will know, h2g2 came to the BBC in early 2000, and acquired me too - as h2g2 Community Editor. After a while I moved on to work on the other BBC online communities, blogs and message boards and so on.

I've really enjoyed the eight years I've spent working at the BBC, but I've been offered a *really* wonderful new job and it's far too good an opportunity to turn down.

So from the BBC point of view this is it for me. I'm off at the end of July, and start my new job in September. I'm taking a month off as I want to give being a slacker a good go!

I'll undoubtedly come back to h2g2 at some point and say hi, I definitely hope to!

Take care everyone, it was the best job ever being h2g2 Community Editor! hug

Aspen, Colorado (Feb 5, 2008)
Hi

I'm off on holiday for two weeks - I'm going ski-ing ski in Aspen Colorado, and then on to Copper Mountain, which is near Denver.

We're meeting an old friend and her husband there, one of the original h2g2 artists, who is now living in Sydney, Australia.

The USA is halfway between us, so the only really practical way to meet up and go ski-ing together. ski ski ski ski

Anyway, I'm not around for just over 2 weeks, so if anything happens, don't blame it on me! winkeye

Cartoons to aid autistic children (Jan 23, 2008)
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/6241733.stm

This is interesting - Cartoons to aid autistic children; A project that has helped a small group of autistic children understand more about human emotions is being launched nationwide.

The project uses cartoons narrated by the actor Stephen Fry to help teach the youngsters about facial expressions.

My gorgeous daughter has all sorts of medical, learning & physical difficulties related to her brain - which is why I'm interested in all this sort of thing.

I also came across this when reading the other article, which says that autistic children don't daydream! I'd never heard that said before, I wonder if it's true? http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/4751075.stm

My colleague, friend and fellow host Doug (Nov 27, 2006)
Doug: Points of View Host

It is with very deep sadness I have to inform you all that one of the hosts of the Points of View board, Doug, passed away suddenly last week, on Wednesday. He was 27 years old.

Doug's postings can be seen on his discussions page, here:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mbpointsofview/MP1564650

Doug was a close personal friend to me, the other Points of View hosts and the programme Production team - as well as to many people within the New Media department and across the wider BBC. We will all miss him terribly. He was a truly great bloke.

Whether you know him from the Points of View message board, or whether you knew him person, he will be greatly missed. For him to die at such a young age makes this news all the more tragic - We'll miss him so much, I'm devastated.

I'm sure you will be able to join me in passing our thoughts and deepest condolences on to Doug’s family and friends at this very sad time.

I hope to be able to pass on some of the messages in the Points of View thread below on to Doug's family.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mbpointsofview/F2131439?thread=3705507

I'll miss you so much Doug. sadface

Merry Christmas 2005! (Dec 22, 2005)

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone from h2g2 and the message boards!

It's been a long year this year, we achieved lots; all the boards are now over on DNA and it's been a long slog, I could really do with a long, long rest now!

I'm working right up until Friday this year, as I'm this year's stand-in - everyone else seems to have gone already! yikes

I'm then off until the beginning of January, as my eldest is celebrating his 18th birthday on the 30th - it's going to be an expensive Christmas break this year!

I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and a very happy 2006. biggrin

Should be good - I'll be back with a hangover (probably) on Monday.

See you then, have fun and be good.

Mollie Senior (Jun 8, 2005)

My children's grandma died the other day. Not my mother, but my ex's mother, called Mollie. cry

Mollie was a fantastic woman (so cool I named my daughter after her). She was a brilliant professional artist, who turned her hand to many artist skills during her life. She was born in Yorkshire, but as she said, escaped, because she couldn't bear the twitching net curtains of a rural village.

She won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art in London during the war (her escape route from the net curtains!), and spent part of the war helping the effort by retouching warships and things out of photos. She was offered a scholarship to an art college in Florence, but had to turn it down, because by then she was pregnant with her first child, not going was always one of her big regrets.

She went on to become one of the group of professional Chelsea Potters in Chelsea in the sixties, and also sold handmade silver and enamel jewelry, which she made, along with pottery, in the kiln that she kept in my kids' fathers bedroom when he was a lad.

She took up printing, and etching - when you carve the picture into metal and produced prints from the etchings.

Later in life, when she was really getting on a bit, she took up glass engraving, and within a few years really mastered that too, producing the most beautiful glasses, and other engraved items. She had a cottage in Cornwall, and in the door was a swirly blue glass circle, with a dolphin swimming in the glass that she'd engraved. She also produced items like tigers in caves, so not names on glasses type engraving at all. She was so naturally talented that she was invited to become an honourary member of the Guild of Glass Engravers, whose patron was the Queen Mother.

Throughout her life Mollie painted in oils and acrylics. As she became very old she took on watercolour painting, and again was so skilled at that, producing paintings of all sorts of things, teddies for the grandchildren, and bowls of grapes that glistened with drops of water, with added nasty wasps, just to give them a bit of the evil edge - she wasn't a conformist in any way!

So here's to Mollie. cheers A totally extraordinary woman, a woman's libber before there was a womans' lib. A non conformist, a lovely woman, and an incredibly talented artist. I'll miss her...
