So here I am, back in the real world again! Or have I got that one confused somewhere?

Anyway, bin gone since Feb 8, according to the little note on my page, and I come back with 3985 posts waiting for me. No, I'm not going to read them all. Still have way too much run ing around to do for that sorta craic. But the pressure has eased. (My new moto: 'Pressure is for tyres'!)

cheers

Cheese Sandwiches (Dec 1, 2004)
The best way to cut cheese is with a sharp knife. I doesn't matter if it is serrated or not. A simple steady, downwards motion gives the best result.
The best way to cut bread is with a sawing action of a serrated knife.
It is quite easy to do both of these, but how do you cut a cheese sandwich? This has been bothering me for some time now. If you just push the knife downwards, as for cheese, you will only rip or compress the bread. If you saw at it, as for bread, you will pull the cheese slice out of the sandwich. The simple answer is to leave a gap in hte middle of the sandwich between two slices of cheese and cut there. But what about those of us who like a more intense, full of cheese sanwich? Or those (not me) who cut their sandwiches diagonnally? Any suggestions to this one of life's more problematic lunches?

42 (Nov 26, 2004)
If 42 is the answer to Life, the Universe and Everything, as it undoubtably is, has anyone considered the singularities that make up this whole? I mean what if I wanted as answer to just life, and wasn't concerned about the universe or anything else (as unlikely as this may be).
Would it be possible to break 42 down, say to prime factors. So now we have answers:
Life: 2,
the Universe: 3,
and everything: 7.
Or might it be vice-versa? Or, what if there is nothing but life and a universe? then the answer for Everything could be nothing more than a composite of the others. Sicne life is undoubtably more complex than the universe it inhabits, we may reasonably conclude answers such as:
Life: 6,
the Universe: 7.
But going back to the original answers, they would make sense if there was something big outside of this universe, making the answer 7 for 'everything else' i.e. those not covered by Life and the Universe. Then putting the whole thing together,we get Life, the Universe and everything else, which basicaly means everything anyway. But is there any reliable way to apply 42 as a whole answer to help us in the individual questions of every-day life?
No, I didn't think so.
