Most people make a full recovery, but several hundred suffere complications such as pneumonia, blood poisoning, infection by flesh-eating bacteria.
CP claims up to 50 lives/year, 40 of them children.
There are concerns that vaccinating ahgainst CP could cause an up surge of shingles in adults.
