I'm not really sure h2g2 is for me. there's a cliqeiness that's beginning to irk. i find posting really difficult cos you often get misunderstood or ignored if you're not one of the in crowd. and I've never been someone that's part of the in crowd in my life.......maybe its my present mood? and then some jerk will read this and turn it on me in some thread..And these smiliies. Why do i find them just so silly?

well there was an 'in' crowd earlier on - aload of drunken US thingites celebrating Thanksgiving. I tried to ask questions and felt irritated with their disgusting gluttony. Okay I'm being a bit funny about it. But I had been having problems on another thread - complicated misunderstandings But to be honest its because I'm feeling like absolute shit at the moment. There are lots of researchers who _seem_ to be rather close (perhaps offline) friends and do not let you into their conversations. However there is a chance (more a probability) this is due just by the vision of the reader. Try to interpretate < A1950329 > considering my own converations make up small stories, apparently nonsense but perhaps carrying a simple massage for one who really reads them. Lots of the threads downhere are made up by thought snippets, hard to comprehend. Nevertheless I strongly suggest for the best understanding one should first read about contributing researchers. *drunken US Thingite jerk celebrating Thanksgiving with disgusting gluttony who happened to read this*  Hello, redpeckham. I apologize for not welcoming you to h2g2 sooner than this. You are most welcome here in spite of the fact that you may be feeling ignored from time to time. I arrived here nearly two years ago, and like you, I felt uncomfortable and ignored at first. It's taken time for me to develop close friendships here just as it does in real life. When I first arrived, I was welcomed warmly and then everyone went back about their normal business, conversing amongst themselves and only occasionally replying to my posts. (EvilRoy was one notable exception, but then again, he's a very friendly evil bloke.  )After my early discomfort, within a comparatively short length of time, I found many more researchers to converse with than I could possibly handle. I'm sure that if you give things more of a chance, you may find the same to be true for you. As in real life, people here tend to form their groups of familiar friend's 'faces', and unfortunately, they simply may not be able to take the time to reply to every posting. In fact, few of us do. I'm *still* regularly ignored even by those who are closest to me. See? This *is* just like real life.  My suggestion is to plow in and start having fun wherever you find it. If you like to argue about politics and your passions, then there are threads where that is welcomed and encouraged. If you aren't up to being bashed by the opposition, you may prefer the crazed silliness and banter of the Thingite threads ... but remember, there are well over 300 of us now, and we don't *all* know one another well. If you find yourself being ignored, join the crowd! We all are to some extent unless we're being entertaining in some way. Perhaps the best advice I had in the beginning was from an article on the rules of 'Netiquette' that I believe you will find on Shea's page. My postings aren't always perfectly in line with these suggested "rules", but I do try. "Bob" knows I've made some huge mistakes in the past two years.  Since the written word is so permanent and more powerful than you might imagine, we all do well to heed these guidelines in order to keep the peace and enjoy one another's companionship with a minimum of misunderstanding. We're assembled from a wide array of cultures here, and we each see things in a slightly different way. The worst part is not being able to convey subtle nuances that are normally carried in our voices or in body language. I simply can't get away with some of the ornery remarks I make in real life when everyone can see my wide smile, or hear that I'm on the verge of laughter in my voice. For that reason, most of us add the little smileys to help show our intent. We simply *need* them.I wish you years of enjoyment with us should you decide to stay, redpeckham. Don't allow your feelings to overwhelm you. I understand how easy this is when one is given to passion, as I am also. Once again, welcome to h2g2.

I for one hope you stick around. I'm more infrequent a poster than I used to be - but I've been hanging round this place for oooh about 3 years now - longer even. <oldfogey> I can;t add much on top of AW's excellent post other than give it time H2G2 is dizzingly huge, you'll make friends and find stuff that interests you swiftly enough. Have you tried PeerReview - as h2g2 is essentially a site that encourages people to write (with a fairly well developed and cohesive community on the side         ) The Peer Review area is where Researchers get together and critique each others writing to get the best out of an article before it enters The Holy Pantheon of The Edited Guide. I'm told it can be very worthwhile experience. Clive.
thingite camaraderie is the best feeling loads better appreciation is of the highest order.
We are pretty special.
... and we're humble too. 
....it must be those endlessly fascinating contradictions that really makes a thingite a thingite, that rare thing a young head on wise shoulders.
